I want to get into medicine and I studied National 5 Apps of Math in s4 but now I’m in s5 and have jumped to Higher Math instead of Applications, is it possible for me to get an A? I’m already very confused, should I go over Nat5 in my own time?

I wouldn't say it's impossible however it would be incredibly difficult. Higher builds a lot on N5 skills so you need to know both to do well. I would recommend doing N5 this year and then doing Higher in 6th year. not to say you can't do it but it would take a lot of work to find any success never mind an A

its possible, a relitave of mine done N5 apps and went straight to higher, but he had a bit it practice with n5. it is easy - he got an A.

How are you finding higher maths without doing nat 5 maths? I am in the same situation at the moment.

Hi I have a similar situation to you I would like to do medicine aswell , I’m doing Nat 5 applications of maths this year in s5 . I’m thinking about picking higher maths but I’m not sure if it will be possible

Hi, all subjects are doable. However, you will likely struggle - this is because you absolutely need a strong N5 for Higher Maths, as there are many questions where the SQA expect you to be able to utilise that knowledge to answer a question/give your final answer. That being said, it's very risky to crash a Higher in S5, especially if you're looking to do medicine - you are essentially jeopardizing your grades. If you feel you are able to do it, go ahead and try. But my recommendation would be take 5 Highers and N5 maths this year, then go on to Higher Maths next year. You might want to check with uni admissions teams, but I don't think this will affect your chance of an offer 🙂

Im currently doing Nat 5 maths, and im telling you that you NEED to have the basic foundation skills and a deep understanding of the topics. Even though it’s not that difficult in n5, it’s crucial to know for higher in my opinion!

from my analysis, you can crash higher math at S6 but generally it will be highly difficult to do it straight in S5 if you havent done nat5 one
