Is a English a useful degree?

Hi @SIOCD

All degrees are very valuable in different ways.

There are usually, in the most simplified terms, two types of degrees. There are academic degrees and there are vocational degrees. So the difference between them is that one is more academically orientated whereas vocationally degrees and more work/career orientated, so they're gearing you up for a specific profession. For example, degrees such as Primary Education with QTS, Paramedic Science, Midwifery etc. They are all vocational. Historically, more academic degrees were seen as more prestige and elite.

So English would more likely fit into the academic category. Remember this is just in very simple terms, it is much more complicated than this way of looking at it. Having a degree that is academically oriented definitely attracts a wide range of employers. It demonstrates to them just how capable you are using your brain, thinking critically and deeply, being creative, problem solving and many other great attributes.

And of course, if it is a subject that you enjoy then it is definitely worth considering. The best way to do well in your degree is firstly by enjoying what you're studying.

I wish you all the best:smile:
