Physics to Civil Engineering (retraining)

Has anyone here managed to retrain in civil or structural engineering?

I have a degree in physics (1st) and I was looking at the graduate diploma and MSc in civil engineering at UCL, but the fees are over £12,000 and given London living costs, it doesn't seem realistic.

Is there any other way to retrain without an MEng?

I have an offer for a graduate entry medicine course but I deferred as I've been thinking my strengths and interests are in maths and physics, but realistically I know medicine will guarantee a job.
