Sixth Form

Hi, I know this is a bit of a narrow question, but I want to go to Pates Grammar School sixth form. I'm in year 11 and have to apply soon but the minimum points (grade 9 is 9 points etc.) is 57 and the minimum predicted grade is 7 in any subject to be studied at A level. I have exactly 57 points and my predicted grades for the A levels I want to take are as follows.
physics-7
chemistry-7
further maths-7
economics- (I don't take economics GCSE)
I know they have a VERY high oversubscription rate but if I work really, really hard and get at least 9 A* in GCSE and call the admissions team on the results day, do you think I would be offered a place based on my actual GCSEs (almost straight 9s) on results day even if I get rejected right now based on my predicted grades?

It is a very specific question and I think it is unlikely you will get an answer because it is so specific. No one can say for certain so keep working hard and hopefully you get the grades you need to go to the sixth form you want to.

I go to pates and it’s very competitive, with over 900 students applying for the external places. they also give priority to current pates students, and they base application places off mock grades and not results so you probably won’t get in, especially as you need at least an 8 in each subject you do. However, if you try appealing there is a chance (but it’s very slim) of getting a place if you drastically improve your grades.

Based on how i've found exams currently i am predicting 70 in my best 8, if i do appeal with 9s in each subject i do, do you think i have a chance?

there’s no harm in trying but imo it would be unlikely you would be offered a place (especially bc there are only around 100 spots for externals 😬😬) unless some people drop out/don’t accept their offer/don’t meet the 57 point threshold

Funny that this popped up on my feed. I happen to go to Pate's.

For the original question, I suppose there's a chance you could be accepted on results day, yes. But keep in mind that there were a substantial number of externals who were predicted ~72 top 8 and didn't get an offer, so your competition will be extremely stiff. That being said, if you do have good results on the day (basically all A*s) then definitely give them a call since there will certainly be some internals who missed the entry requirements, and hence there may be a limited number of spaces available. Nothing is guaranteed, but if (as you said) you work very hard and get all A*s you stand a good chance.

For anonymousShark07, its worth calling on results day either way. Ideally to stand a good chance you would like to have 72 but it all depends on how everything goes on results day. Again, as I said its worth calling them but nothing is guaranteed. Good luck anyhow!

what if u get good enough grades but do unpopular a level subjects? (not your regular maths, bio chem combo)

how did they not get in? 72 is the max u can get - was it bc of their subject combo?

To be honest with you, I have no idea. I mean competition in my year was already nutty (68 cutoff external), but the competition for the incoming cohort is borderline ridiculous. I genuinely don't have
much advice to give on this point. Maybe it was the subject combo? Med combo is seriously oversubscribed as it is. Can't be sure though.

that’s insane !? i honestly have no clue if I would get into Pate’s if I wasn’t an internal. also I’m pretty sure they don’t really care about subject combos that much (but idk if applications for externals are different). I do know people who got accepted with the bio chem maths combo but the lowest score ive know that people have gotten offers with this year is 68

im doing politics, german/history, spanish, english literature

Yeah, I know they don't do option blocks as such, but they are still limited to an extent by how many members of staff are actually available to teach each subject. But as I said, it's just a guess. I have no real idea what the specifics are. Maybe the local council is not allowing them to increase the size of the sixth form any further which could be a factor too (Pate's is top-heavy as it is).

Frankly not my area of expertise (I'm a bit of a STEM merchant) so I couldn't say. As I've said to others though, it's worth calling on results day either way. There's nothing to lose imo. 68 is a competitive top 8, but I have no idea what the competition is like this year.

You can definitley try, i will call up on results day based on what i get. But I am certain there wont be a place for me as i am doing the typical maths bio chem physics combo, but i would say you have a better chance than me

there’s honestly no way of telling 😕😕 but like people said there’s no harm in calling them up on the day. ik a few people who aren’t staying for 6th form so there may be spaces?? tbh i’m not entirely sure how it works but generally if people don’t confirm their place/accept their offer after results day you might have a chance

i go to pates and you might, because they are trying to increase their humanities intake so i’d say u have a chance, however it definitely isn’t guaranteed so try to keep ur options open

You might, but they’ll give offers to people who had the highest points first because there will only be max one or two spots available so it’ll most likely go to someone with all nines. Fingers crossed for you tho x
