Sixth Form/A-Level Advice

Hey there! I'm currently going into Year 11 this year, and looking into A-level courses, and potential sixth forms. I'm interested in going into veterinary medicine as a career, however I know it's highly competitive, so I'm trying to keep an open mind.

My current predicted grades;
English (both) - 8
Maths (including further maths) - 8
Biology - 8
Chemistry - 7 (currently achieving at high 7, hoping toget it up to 8 next year for mocks)
Physics - 7
Business - 8
Geography - 7
Latin - 8

For A-level, I'm planning to take Biology, Chemistry, English Literature and potentially psychology as a 4th (if needed). Any feedback on these would be really helpful!

I've been looking at a variety of sixth forms (particularly LAE, although I'm not sure whether it'll be unachievable).

Does anyone have any advice on sixth forms that would work, and a bit of a reality check!

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it!

(as someone who has just finished y11 and will be going to sixth form in a few weeks)
it depends on the area you live in (ie commute commitments) as well as each school's performances in the subjects you want to take
honestly by the look of it you have really good grades so far and definitely have the potential to get into almost any sixth form you'd like
i'd definitely spend the next few months researching your local sixth forms in terms of their performance, how good the teaching is and how nice the community is to help make your decision, and definitely try to attend as many open days as possible (these usually take place in around october-november)
also research veterinary sciences as a degree in depth to see what a-levels you might need to get into your dream universities (but by the looks of it you're on the right path already with both bio and chem as options)
https://www.ucas.com/explore/subjects/veterinary-science
since you're considering LAE (it's not near where I live so i don't know too much abt it) it says you have to achieve "at least five 9-7 GCSE grades (A*-A in unreformed subjects), achieve a grade 6 or above in both GCSE Mathematics and English Language and achieve at least a 9-7 grade in the GCSE subjects they wish to continue to study at A level in Year 12 and meet minimum course requirements" so you'll be fine

also, i think one really important factor in deciding sixth forms is how unis contextualise grades, as in from a uni's pov it's better to get e.g. 3 As in a school that isn't filled with high overachieving pupils that all get As and A*s at A-level compared to one that does (where it's harder to stand out)
that being said, the decision is completely up to you as to where you think you would get the most teaching and support
hope this all helped and good luck with gcses and deciding your sixth form xx

Thanks a lot! Fingers crossed. I've booked a few open day slots, and I'll try and visit as many as I can. We're doing our mocks the week we go back to school, so hopefully I'll have a more definite idea of what I'm likely to get.

I really appreciate your helpful response, thank you!

Thank you! Unfortunately, the only sixth form near us (less than 45 minutes away) is my school's one, which due to personal issues at the school, I'm hoping to leave and have a fresh start somewhere else! The closest ones are the London sixth forms; which from what I can tell, tend to be more high-achieving compared to local area ones, which is a bit of a pain. I'll definitely keep it in mind, thank you!
Also just sth to point out in terms of social life in sixth form if you're moving to a new sixth form, you'll meet new people and have to socialise and make new friends (I am an introvert and find this quite draining btw), and considering sixth form is quite short and fast paced, you might spend a lot of time worrying about friendship and not do so well in your studies - so consider meeting up with ppl at your new sixth form before Sept

Thank you! The meeting new people is actually something I'm really looking forward to, haha! Definitely a good thing to keep in mind in terms of spending more time on studies, I'll take a look!

ah yes i see... that's completely understandable, and changing sixth forms definitely will give you a fresh start and will be an amazing chance to meet new people and be that bridge between high school and uni
good luck with everything!
