Mechanical Engineering

Hello,
I am in year 12 studying Maths, Business and psychology. I am currently stuck in between doing finance at university or Engineering (mainly mechanical). So my question is if there is anyone that went on to do M.ENG without a level physics.
based off my research, i know that there are a few unis that dont require physics but only maths and that i could also do a foundation year. But i just want to know if you really do need it/ how it was without physics at alevel.
thanks

Hi I am in the same year as you and don't know much but you might have to apply to a foundation year since you don't do maths and a science... If u did do a science it would not have to be physics and if you can might be better off asking your school to let you do an AS level in physics. You will definitely need physics to understand many of the forces that come into play and how different factors affect different mechanics. Most good unis do require physics or any science, you could also take further maths as that includes further mechanics and will be good enough to go to a good uni for engineering. I know uni of Sheffield is good and offers a foundation year.. I would definitely ask if i could take AS level science or further maths as that will be a lot easier than a foundation year

Top unis are completely out of your reach unless you do a gap year, its just too competitive, you really want FM and physics, mid/poor unis you may be able to go to.

Having A-level physics definitely will help with context and background knowledge, mechanical engineering is really “applied physics” however mechanics in A-level maths also provides a similar introduction.

In terms of academic preparation A-level mathematics is far more important then A-level physics.

I think from a capability perspective you’ll be fine if you perform well in A-level maths but you may want to do some reading of physics principles so you understand what you are getting yourself in for (brief background in forces & energy in mechanical & electrical systems).

Hi!

I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering and have just finished my second year! I will answer the question on whether you really need A-level Physics. As you have identified some universities don't require you to have that A-Level and I know people who didn't do it as well! As well as this, the great thing about first year is that everyone is brought up to the same level regardless of prior knowledge so everyone has the same information and the content for the course! So even though you aren't doing Physics you will still be taught the required content. I would suspect that like Coventry University that if you are struggling with any of the content going to the lecturers and asking for the help is always recommended! Also, if you apply to universities that require A-level Physics talking to their admissions about your options or doing a foundation year!

Hope this helps!

Kind Regards,

-Wanita

You could also self study A level physics and take the exam as a private candidate
