Choosing between two completely different uni courses

Hi there, I'm currently in year twelve and so don't have much to worry about at the moment but for the past four years, I've known that I've wanted to study BSL at uni, however in the past few months I've been looking at the UCAS website and costume design has been really sticking out to me. I know that costume design probably has more cons than pros (including having to pay for your own fabric) but it is a lot easier to find information about as there are only four universities in the country that provide the BSL degree level course (none of which are anywhere near where I live). I do understand that I can do a separate BSL course, not at degree level but it's very difficult to give up on something I've been insistent on for years. I'm doing English Language, Classical Civilization and Art A-Levels.

It might be worth trying to gain experience in both if possible , take online courses, think about what you see yourself doing , weight up the pros and cons . It may also be worth looking at fashion design courses as you can specialise at masters level. Get yourself a sewing machine and trying learning how to sew and get abode or indesign so you can learn the basic cad skills . Speak to teachers..

I would also suggest writing a personal statement for each course and go with your heart

Costume design is also quite a niche subject there are limited options, at Bournemouth you can either do the design aspect or making but not both. I totally understand your decision, in year 12 I decided to switch from applying to Engineering to Fashion Design and then switched to Costume Design. I think the choice was easier for me because I cried every time I thought about studying engineering. I took this amazing online course given by UAL for Costume and Set Design, it’s a bit pricey but also something I seriously enjoyed and it was the deciding factor between fashion and costume. Since you’re still in year 12 you can maybe try asking your teachers if you can do a textiles project (as in making a garment), I’ve done 2 at A-level and I did one at GCSE. I saw your other reply and I don’t suggest doing fashion design instead because they are very different in how you learn and design. You could always apply for a foundation year, it’s one year and you apply outside of UCAS so it won’t take up a choice, if you do it and you think ‘I don’t want to study something in the arts anymore’ the you could treat it like a gap year, if you discover you love it then you would have a higher chance of getting into an arts degree.
