Unsure who to firm

Received offers from the university of Kent, the university of Essex and The University of East Anglia for business/management and marketing.

I am having some doubts about going to university but I'm not sure if it's because of I'll be going as a mature student or if it's because of the subject or no one being given happy or excited for me. The only other subjects I can see my self enjoying is art /fashion design/ but I dont feel like it's worth paying to study.

Is it bad sign that I received offers and I was worried I wouldn't get accepted but I didn't feel that much excitement or emotion when I see I got accepted.

Uni gives you a lot of debt and while this isn't in practice a huge issue due to the system, if you don't even really want to study business, what is your reason for choosing it and for choosing these universities?

My main motivation was to get into marketing (I have been rejected for jobs because I don't have a degree specifically in business /marketing). I'm sick of working in customer service and I dont want to return back to education.

When I was looking through degrees, the jobs they could lead to and what degrees I could potentially get on to my main options were:

1) art - didn't bother with it due to low job prospects and knowing I don't want to work in education. Enjoy the subject just dont know what I would do after studying it. ( family supports it but they would rather me work as a teacher). I know I could go into art therapy but it's an extremely niche career path.

Have some experience within teaching kids art in two different working settings ( it felt underwhelming and gave me an impression that i would be stuck inthe same place and seems like a toxic place to be in) career wise would be interested in commissioning work / being an art director but I commissioning work doesn't require a degree and becoming an art director could take 10 plus years based off experience.

2) fashion design - my technical skills wouldnt be up to standard , very competitive, if I didn't end up working in the fashion industry with would have to hope i get on to masters to spealise in something else ( family doesn't support it)

Jobwise I'm interested in becoming a designer, fashion marketer or running my own fashion business.

3) business and marketing - still has maths but isnt beyond my level , studied at gcse i actually really enjoyed it, can be creative (depending on modules) ( family kinda support it but feels like it could be restricting and feels art would be a better choice , family completely dismiss the marketing part of the degree and the careers it could lead to and focus on the management side which im not as interested in)

careers wise I would be interested in marketing, social media executive, branding , business development ( unsure about marketing/ business analytics) , creative direction - again based on experience rather than degree. Would love to have my own business.

Ultimately the childhood dream would be to run my own fashion label/business - have some creative input mainly from a designer view or marketing side.

Adult me I would side love to pursue my childhood dream but in terms of being able to live marketing seems to perk my interest as a main job. I would love to be able to come up with creative concepts / stories which will be used for advertisements.

did speak to advisers before applying but they didn't seem to care or bothered. Pretty much just said to look at university subjects.

The reason for choosing the universities is mainly down to location, how well graduates do after uni( % working in the sector, average earnings ect) , cost of rent and my options with the grades I have.

My plans after university would be to
Complete business /marketing degree with experience. Apply for a masters within data science or business/marketing analytics and data science so I can progress to higher paying roles.

Plan two would be to apply for a postgraduate diploma in art and design ( rca and ual offer) or apply for the fashion design ma and hope for the best but still not sure if it is even necessary as I would prefer not to work for other companies.

Congrats on your offers, that's fantastic news!

Have you visited any of them for an offer holder day yet? We've got our next one at Colchester this Saturday, 9th March. It's a great idea to visit a campus that you're thinking of attending so you can see what it will be like to live there.

Don't forget that the uni experience is about more than the degree modules you'll be studying. You can definitely pursue your interests in other ways by joining clubs and societies and getting involved in student life.

At Essex we have a programme called Essex Startups, which is geared towards entrepreneurs interested in starting their own business, no matter which degree they're studying. This is something that you could do (for free!) alongside your degree. At the very least, you would have access to support and guidance, workshops and networking opportunities

Congratulations on receiving your offers! :smile:

Although you may not feel like celebrating right now, you have done great to secure yourself offers from different Universities! That is really amazing! :biggrin:

I understand the feeling of doubt, I also felt the same when I was accepted into a course (which I was not sure I wanted to pursue as a career). It is still early stages of your studies and careers, and it can be normal to feel uncertain, so it is not necessarily a bad thing. Perhaps some research into the courses, potential career prospects can get you more interested in studying at University? I find it is also important to consider why you chose the courses and Universities in the first place when making a decision.

Kent is a lovely University, the reason I chose Kent was the specific modules offered in the law undergraduate programs. The different sectors of law and teaching approaches really interested me, so looking into this may help you make a decision. :smile:

I am a final year student and my experience at Kent has been really amazing. There is a good work-life balance, we are given independence and freedom to organise our workloads and how we spend our free time.

In terms of studies, we are offered a lot of support from our division- seminar leaders, lecturers, academic advisors, module convenors, and even students from higher years. Teachers that deliver our lessons are really friendly and approachable, and I always feel comfortable to ask them any questions. :smile:

Outside of studies, there are also other support available, such as mental health and wellbeing support, career support, etc. In terms of social life at Kent, there are many societies that host a variety of events, these are a really good opportunity to meet new people and friends. There is a diverse range of societies and groups! :smile:

Furthermore there are many events hosted by our student union: you mentioned coming to University as a mature student, there are actually many events hosted throughout the year for mature students to network and meet each other. :biggrin:

In general though, you should not worry about joining University as a mature student. In my course, there are multiple mature students. Given the diverse cultures and backgrounds, I am sure you will fit in well.

Hi there,

This is fantastic! Really well done for the offers!

Attending university should generally be a personal choice. This is the moment when you are ready to take on a decision to want to focus on a topic you find fascinating. And you really have to view it in this way because no one forces you to attend classes or engage with your lecturers. It's untimely your decision how much you want to get out of it. From personal experience and also by looking at highly successfully (professionally) students, the more you engage during your course, the better your chances are to land a succesful high paying job, the more inspiring people you mean and the generally you become more positive and looking forward to your next moves. Whilst engaging in class is definitely very important, it is equally important to be involved in as many activities as possible to try different things and find out what you like the most. I personally moved countries 3 times and studied in 3 different universities here in the UK (BSc/MSc/PhD) and this has opened so many doors, professionally but also personally. I've met some of the most inspiring people in my course that when onto building extraordinary careers and businesses.

UEA specifically is an outstanding institutions, it's hughly ranked for research. Whiles you might not necessarily be interested in research yourself, when unis do great research this really rings several bells to employes. Also the quality of the teaching is overall better, because you are thought by world leaders. You have the chance to learn from the best and can approach them after your lecture and ask for internships/ jobs etc.

Whilst higher education is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, I am a big advocate for it as it really broadens your horizons (other than the subject knowledge you gain). Best of luck with your decision and let me know if I can be of any help.

There are some fashion business degrees like fashion marketina. which combines fashion and marketing. The math required for fashion marketing won't be too hard. It should be more creative and more interesting than other normal business degrees.

Business management would be a really good subject if you are unsure because it is likely to cover a wide range of subjects very applicable to the real world and finding a future job. Therefore, later on you may realise which element of business to specialise in!

Maybe when you get there you will feel more excited and definitely worth seeing when you get there as would potentially be able to switch between options.
