How easy/ difficult is it to switch courses at Imperial?

I'm thinking about *maybe* trying to switch to JMC.

WOW!!!

Halls are expensive compared to every other uni i've applied to. Been looking at fisherhall. Hopefully it won't be too competitive to get a room there.

With internet, if I use youtube to mp3 convertor, will that be punishable?

What are the sanctions for 'anything less than legal'?

Thanks for asking the question that I wanted to ask :five: I listen to a bitta dubstep so it's hard to download those tunes off iTunes so I do have to use converters. I'll stalk the reply to your question :ninja:

Well if the common room has wifi then music can just be downloaded onto a mobile device then transferred to a computer.

 Just realised. Gaming will be hard with a 5Gb cap  That's like 1 hour a day?

From what I'm told the people who usually get caught for doing dodgy stuff only got caught in the first place because they went over the 5gb limit and then the admins found out what they did. I guess they'd have a hell of a job ahead of them if they investigated every thing we did. Of course don't take just my word for it, but that's what I often hear

What gaming do you do that needs 5Gb a day?

Just don't do any torrents and stay below the 5gb per 24hrs and you'll be fine. They don't monitor/care what you're doing exactly then.
I wanted to avoid shared rooms, and wanted to avoid being at Beit (which is where the main college bars/the nightclub is. So I selected all the single non-Beit options I was able to when applying for accom.

I'm now in a premium room, which has a double bed, and is as close to college as you can get. Win!

Will start looking for places to live in the new year after my Jan exams probably.

Why are you looking for a new place to live if you got what you wanted?

Plus I loved beit last year, so much fun, I feel old now :moon:

Online gaming like cod streams large amounts of data. When we were with sky broadband before switching to vigin, there was a 2Gb monthly cap or something like that and after 30 minutes playing on xbox live we got a call from sky saying we had exceeded our monthly cap, so I assume an hour of online play is near enough 5Gb?

I probably sound really stupid.

Ambiguity failure on my part.

In the new year, after my exams, I will start looking for somewhere to live for the next academic year.

I don't recall reading any bias towards long distance students.

My real home is 30 mins commute from South Ken and I got allocated the closest hall (Southside) to my department.

Ahh thats cool then...looking forward to this uni

I never had that problem at home with a 5gb limit a month...

I've kept quiet about it, lest someone should be able to identify me! I do chemistry, I'm in first year, and I live in one of the halls in Prince's Gardens.

When's the right time to start looking, then? Presumably it coincides with summer exam stress! And whereabouts? Hammersmith?

a chemist eh? I have quite a few chemist friends, I only know one first year though and not very well. You probably know people I know though, almost certain actually. I am curious to meet you now, most people at imperial I know don't care about politics or are labour, hmmm :holmes:

I live on the border of west ken/fulham/hammersmith. anywhere around there or, if super rich like one of my friends rent in SK and pay £250 a week no bills inc for the privilege. I started just before summer exams, actually got one after them. There isn't really a shortage of housing and most want you to move in rather soon after you agree to let, otherwise the house is empty not earning for them and london isn't a student town is it? :p:

The first few they show you will be **** though. Ex council house next to the tube line up 5 flights of stairs with no lift, no thanks :p:

I wish I had some older chemist friends, I hear they are a definite advantage and I don't want to pester my 'parents'. I almost certainly do know people you know!

I suspect I will be a massive disappointment. But I often swill Wednesday afternoons away in Eastside bar. And am in the JCR most lunchtimes with my little chums. I'm friends with 2 first year medics, one of whom is 'rimssins' on here.

I did join ConSoc, and tried attending their first meeting in SafCafe, but couldn't find them (and wasn't prepared to go round every table asking "are you the Conservatives?" !). I emailed them afterwards to let them know this, but got no response. So bugger them.

I'm surprised you say most people are Labour. Given that virtually no-one from Imperial went protesting/vandalising (even though the Socialist (non-)Workers Society tried its best) I gained the contrary impression! My friends are predominantly Tory-leaning, with some LibDem sympathies. Not that I made that a precondition of our friendship of course!

Surely no medics support Labour?!

WK/F&H would suit me fine! I see what you mean. I suspect the girls in my group of friends will do the finding and deciding for the most part. They want to start early, but will tell them what you've said.

Pester them! or if you want past papers I know the VP of chem soc. I can get you the goods :p:

I doubt you would be! I must admit I don't know many first year medics I am a terrible parent (life as a single parent is hard *sniff* :p:)

I had the same thing with the conservatives, but didn't get a single email after singing up to the mailing list. The libertarian society as far as I can ascertain exists in name only...

Oh I don't have political friends is all probably. Medics are fairly socialist though, you would be surprised... (I was called evil for saying I wouldn't be willing to take a significant pay cut for the good of the NHS...)

I need the odd political chat :p: Eastide on wednesdays eh...I have dance at 8.30 in EEE on a wednesday so could organise something at some point...

crazylemon, you know everything about Imperial, what can you tell me abot ICRadio? Is it something first years get involved with or do they wait a year or two until they have a lot more 'authority'? Does ICRadio have their own music database that you can get music off or do you have to have your own stuff? Do other students actually listen to it at all? What's the situation like for edgy music like DnB and dubstep, house etc? Does everyone get a go doing their own show or do you "work your way up"? I already do a radio show you see, so I was just curious to know what ICRadio was like.
