St Andrews - Ask A Current Student Thread

I just had a look at the societies, and there are so many interesting socs! I was wondering how many people usually join?

Depends on the society! I'm on the committee of the German society and we have 110 members, but only about 20 actively. Lots of people sign up for loads of stuff in Freshers then don't show up to them. The French Society is bigger and its events are usually more popular but I still went along to one of their film showings and there were only maybe 10 people there.

I think Sappho meant how many different societies does one person join :tongue:

But again, it really depends! The modal number is probably 0, the mean maybe 2-3?

You can join as many as you can fit into a the week.
I signed up to loads of mailing list but didn't actually pay the membership fee. next year I will be more organised though and actually go to some.

You think 2-3 isn't much... but then you factor in work and other socialising and it's suddenly loads. I go to DocSoc, sometimes SciFa, Charities Campaign, DanceSoc - and get emails from numerous others which I wish I could go to but I just don't have the time...

Hey, I was looking through the St Andrews website and seen that there was evening language classes on! I would so love to learn French (which I am trying to do the now) or Chinese :biggrin:

Just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this, or known someone that went to them? Also, if you go to these classes, does it conflict with your arranging of going out i.e is every lesson compulsory? Because I don't want to miss out on making friends or liking going out with friends that I meet in Freshers because I have to go to a class :frown:

And can you stop at beginners rather than having to keep going up and up?

It varies between halls to some extent. The bottom of the first post in this thread has a load of 'mini guides' to the various halls, and some of them have quite a lot of information on the food provided in catered accommodation.

Hey,
I gotrejected from St Andrews, and it was like my dream uni.
I was wondering what the chances might be of a transfer at the end of 1st year (into 2nd year at St Andrews)?
I was considering applying to transfer (unless I fall completely in love with Glasgow) and wanted to know if there was even any point.
Does anyone know anyone that did this?

chance of a transfer is not at all good..

but if you take a year out, and get 41 in your IB, depending on what your subject is, you might be granted direct entry into year two anyway (especially (maybe exclusively actually) in science..

There is indeed an Irish soc but they've had very few events this year.
A few pub crawls, the St. Paddy's day bop, a green bop and there has been talk of a trip to dublin. I've been a bit disappointed with the lack of events but I'm hoping that next year might be better.
P.S. are you Irish?

I'm not Irish, but I've spent my gap year there and really got into playing tunes. If I go study in Scotland it would be great to still be able to play some, because here in Berlin there seems to be none at all and that sucks :frown:
