Applying for teaching post in South Korea and need Ideas for personal statement!

Hi guys!

I'm currently applying for a teaching post in South Korea and I was wondering if I could get some ideas on what to include in the essay/personal statement on why I want to teach in South Korea, my philosophy on education and my thought on encountering cultural differences. I'm sorry if it sounds a bit lame asking for help but It would be helpful if you could. So far I have mentioned experiencing a new culture, meeting new people, an opportunity for a rewarding experience through teaching, adapting to a new environment and experiencing new challenges. The word count is about 800 and I'm a stuck to be honest. Any thoughts? :s-smilie:

What about giving a little paragraph about how you could benefit them? I assume you're already a qualified teacher and have trained in the UK. Maybe mention how you've experienced the education system over here and would be able to link that in with the education system over there to help share ideas to benefit their school? :confused:

I'd write about any experiences you've had with children that have EAL, this shows that you are interested in diversity and other cultures, something essential when moving and working abroad.

Write about any achievements you've experienced whilst teaching in the UK, such as helping the children get good grades or maybe you've done something extra-curricular with the children that is a bit out there. Most importantly though, just be honest and be yourself and you're true personality will come through.

Thats really cool! where are you teaching and how are you fiding it so far? I had the interview this morning and I just received an email confirming my successful interview through the EPIK programme which starts in August, so I'm quite excited, although I don't find out where I'll be teaching until mid August. :biggrin:

I worked for GEPIK for over 2 years. All you need to say on the statement is you'd like to improve their English, you respect South Korean culture etc.

Be polite, say all the right things and try to sound enthusiastic.

I also advise you look at a website called Dave's ESL Cafe. Peruse the 'Korean forums.'

There is alot of useful information on there. Alot of people moan and whinge, but you'll get lots of useful, practical information from that site. The FAQS are especially helpful.

Okay, I'm half korean and am currently spending two weeks here (i want to get out of this place as quickly as possible..)

They're looking for native english speakers. Seriously. So talk about how you're British or whatever and what university you graduated from (education is SERIOUSLY important here..)
And also try to sound like you're interested in the culture. like.. you're trying to learn the language. Learning korean isn't exactly easy as the characters is completely different from the european/western language. They'll respect you more if you know a bit more about korea than the average person. Also talk about how you're able to socialise with people from different cultures, no matter what their race.

Congratulations! I taught in South Korea with EPIK for 2 years (08-10). I was placed in Busan and I loved it. Loved the school, the teachers, made loads of friends who I still talk to all the time. Thinking of going back to visit this summer as I miss it there so much!

You'll have a blast :wink:

I began my contract in ulsan, near busan for the first 6 months. And now im in jeju island, i love it here! Talk programme is different to epik as we have more control over what we teach. But the idea of moving to epik is appealing as the full time hours might be looked on better with future employers in the UK. I love korea and im staying another 6 months..but then ill be 24 so should move on lol.
