hmm so its abit of luck aswell who you get as flatmates:smile:
tough decision but thanks for all your help! are alot of medics and dentists located in windsor or castle?

There are lots of medics this year in Windsor and I know a couple of dentists here too, think it's a pretty even mix of both everywhere though. I think there are 6 medics in Castle Court this year too. No problem! Any other questions just ask

Thanks for that  yeah im not really wanting to stay in Ricky Road or Marris House.
How far are they both from the places where you go on a night out:smile:

Ricky Road and Marris are like a 15 minute walk from the centre of town, or like 5 mins in a taxi, which is cheap if there's a lot of you. Windsor is closer to the centre, but seriously, with Newcastle being so compact, none of the city centre halls are far from town. The slight advantage that Windsor has is that it is like 5 mins nearer to the centre, and right next to the Robinson Library, which is the main Uni library. It is also nearer the other Uni buildings, besides the medical school which is nearer Rocky Road and Marris.

But really, location dosen't really matter in terms of the city centre - they're all very close to/ in it

Basically, i'm looking for a central (walking distance to campus) ensuit self catered accomodation, however i may compromise on the en-suit. Victoria halls, central link and castle court all look amazing but i get the impression from students i've spoke to and people on here that these are generally the 'quite' accomodations with less socialising going on. (not saying this is true!) and I get the impression that richardson road is the 'part halls' which seems great as i am a very sociable person and enjoy going out, but the accomodation its self looks very basic.

Part of me is thinking I want a nice, modern en-suit room, but then i worry about the social side of this, and part of me is thinking F**k it, its only for a year just go and have fun and dont worry how good your accomdation is. Would taking the 2nd option be a decision i would later regret? or would it be a missed experience?

Could anyone who lives/has lived in any of these accomodations give their opinion on what they are actually like or what there experience was like in them? and is it as bad as some people think sharing toilets and showers? I just dont fancy the inconvienience to be honest.

Help! please

I don't live in any of them, but from what you've just described Windsor Terrace could be good for you? They do ensuite, are right next to the library, and from what I hear can be quite sociable. And if you don't mind sharing a bathroom one between three then Marris House is a step up from Ricky Road, but still as sociable.

But this is just from what I've heard and what was said when I visited last October

go for it! i would 100% say it would be something you would regret not doing, i was in ricky road for my first year and it was literally the best year of my life!! im in third year now and am still friends with the majority of people in my block and we are always saying how we wish we could be back in ricky road! i hadnt seen the accommodation before i moved in and im not going to lie when i first arrived my initial thoughts weren't great, however the rooms aren't actually that bad as soon as you get your things into them. i never had any issues with the shared showers and toilets. also regarding concerns about exam times and it being to noisy - in my experience noone went out during the exam period as everyone was in the same position and had exams so that was never a problem, also the medical school computer cluster is a 2 minute walk away which came in very handy!

i don't know a single person that didn't love being in ricky road, though i do know people in other halls, especially castle leazes, that wished they could be in ricky road to!

Like someone else has previously said, Windsor Terrace sounds good for you, but the problem is, it sounds good for EVERYONE, so it's massively oversubscribed - you're unlikely to end up there unless you have deferred entry or something. The honest truth is that most people end up in Richardson Road - I put my form in mid March last year (So in fairly good time), and didn't even put it down and still ended up there.

But that isn't necessarily a bad thing - I was quite worried when I was put there but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it'd be. You're usually in a flat of 6 - 3 guys, 3 girls, and share a toilet and shower, but there's 3 sinks in total. I was there for 2 months and there was never a queue for the shower as people started at different times. Also, my room was bigger than I thought it'd be, but I was lucky because mine was rectangualr (some are octagonal)! Aesthetically, the buildings look a bit grim, but it's uni halls at the end of the day, so what does it matter?

Socially, it does live up to it's 'party' reputation - expect flat/block mates going out quite a few times a week - but if you're in to that, it's a positive (not so much when you don't go out and your flatmates have a sort of 'afterparty' until 5am :P). Also, although there will be people who are just like 'I wanna drink all the time and party so I'll apply for Ricky Road', a lot of people are in the same boat in terms of not wanting to be there - only 1 of my flatmates had it as their first choice, and mostly applied for the expensive ones - but then ended up really liking Ricky - It's cheap in comparison to others aswel!

So to conclude, try your luck with Windsor Terrace, it's probably the best in terms of being a good compromise (I can't comment any further though because I've only seen it from the outside), but don't be surprised if you're put in Ricky Road - it's not the end of them world, but just remember, it is lively.

thanks everyone, very useful information
Im now swaying more and more to richardson road, due to the social side of it. I want a uni experience ill never forget, and as a student i cant really expect great accomodation. plus its only a year.

Alot of people have said they ended up in richardson road, as they missed out on their prefered choices. Does this make it very likely to get put in richardson road if you put it as your first option?

I've not seen Bowsden court mentioned on here a lot, but i'm not concerned about it being quiet - what I am concerned about is the distance from the teaching buildings. Do most people catch buses? How long does it take to walk/cycle? I really, really want an ensuite but i'm concerned about not getting one if I pick choices that are closer, because they seem very popular.

I don't live in Bowsden, just know a few people who do and they absolutely love it - it's relatively small so there's a real community feel to it and they all go out together. Transport I've known people get the metro (where you can dodge the fare if you're that kind of person), for freshers and stuff there are free buses but after that you're on your own I think.

Not sure about the process of how you're allocated.

But just a little note about Ricky Road...you will definitley not forget the stay there!

Do you mean that in a good way or a bad way?
Whatever you do just make sure you get your choices in QUICK !!!! If you dont then you may have to temporarily share a bedroom like I did. Wasn't that bad for me because we got along but i know people who had problems. The first few nights are very AWKWARD. And I shared for 2 months ! Untill I got my mum to call them and tell them she was 'worried' about me because I sounded down which quickly led to me getting my own room. Naughty but it needed to be done.

Thanks  I quite like the community aspect, but I was a bit concerned because it's also open to postgraduates, I don't want to be one of a tiny number of undergrads who are forced to hang around together  I'll probably look into some of the metro fares and things.

On that note, is anyone else having trouble creating a log-in? My track updated today but it won't recognise my details. Do we have to wait for something through the post, first? :s-smilie:

I've accepted Newcastle as my first choice to study Economics and have just sent off my application for student accomodation. I have put Central Link as my first choice  is anyone else thinking of going there?

It's bizarrely like Windsor Terrace in terms of interior, they're like the same place (though I don't know if they're getting new couches next year too). Socially it's pretty good, and either way you're close to ricky road.

Put in my application today. Bowsden Court, Castle Court and Castle Leazes, then St Marys, Castle Leazes and Henderson Hall. Fingers crossed I get one :s-smilie:

After narrowing down the accomodation options I am left to choose between Bowsden Court, Castle Court, Central Link, Victoria Halls & Windsor Terrace (self-catered, en-suite, mixed gender).

However, I may drop Central Link and Victoria Halls as the contract lengths are 43 and 42 weeks opposed to 38 weeks elsewhere. Are the 38 week contracts long enough to cover the whole academic year from September till June? If I opt for the 42 or 43 week choices will I be paying for longer than my actual stay? I will be living at home for the summer so will only be needing accomodation until the end of the course (Maths Mmath).
