Me too :cute:

Yay!

Where are you planning on applying to?
Original post by minhle20
I'm planning to apply for Biomedical Science as my 5th choice.

I wanted to do this too but when I selected it(Buckingham university) ucas said I had exceeded the medicine options and I have to remove one

Really? That's so weird:confused:

I always thought that 4 medicine and 1 biomed would be ok.

Exactly! I think I'll ring up ucas later on this month!
Can't believe it's time to apply for ucas again!

Hows everyones gap years going? enjoying it? going fast? It's around this time I was told is the hardest as most of our friends go off to uni for freshers and all that.

Also I would advise people to join the skype interview group when that comes around, very good way of getting practice for interviews.

I applied to Glasgow, Dundee, Edinburgh and Aberdeen last time and only got an interview for Glasgow and was declined, I think it was mostly due to my ukcat score of 615 but I'm sitting this years one in 2 days! Hopefully I'll do a bit better! Thinking of only applying to 3 instead of 4 med schools now though.
Good luck to you all!

Keep your eyes peeled around the start of Freshers, that's all I'll say
At Scottish universities, Scottish and RUK (rest of UK) applicants don't actually compete against each other, I assume due to differences in funding. So no preference is given to Scottish over English / NI / Welsh applicants, although they may have fewer spaces for RUK applicants than English unis have for home students.

Aye, don't blame you - is your commute still an hour and a half long? (Hope I haven't got the wrong blog there!) That's commitment!
Eh.. honestly, your job as an HCA will probably give a greater insight into the workings of a hospital / multi-disciplinary team / role of a doctor etc. than you'd get from your standard week of work experience, so write away! Obviously it depends on what you write, but I'd say HCA work is looked upon favourably. No real risk of looking like you want to go into nursing, unless you just write about your observations of nurses :p:
Just the extended patient contact aspect of it is beneficial, IMO. As I said, I worked in a care home that was staffed purely with care assistants and nurses - not a doctor in sight, bar the occasional visiting GP. You learn loads just by interacting with patients.

Trust me, the UKCAT feels a lot easier the second time round. Although it's said to be an aptitude test, I went from 665 last year to 715 this year without much more practice - I was just used to the style of question. I honestly wouldn't think about it too much until after you've taken it - if you put yourself under pressure to get a high score, chances are you'll just get stressed out!

What happens at the start of freshers ?

Party, partying and partying some more. After that happens, they will usually give you an introductory lecture on a medicine related topic (which usually doesn't exceed A-level Biology standard), but TattyBoJangles might tell us a brief overview of her experience as a medic fresher.

Don't be. Think positive. You will meet a lot of patients of different walks of life. Some patients I met were simply inspiring. You'll be fine

Aside from being in a state of confusion for the first few days and meeting loads of people in awkward encounters, we had a few introductory lectures and were set some work. Nothing too hard, but it was given to us at 9am in the first Monday..

The standard question during Freshers is "what are you studying / where are you staying?"
It got to the point where I'd asked it so much that when I had my occupational health appointment, I actually ended up asking the nurse those questions -.-

Edit: I'm keeping a freshers blog, the link to which is in my sig. Which reminds me, I need to write my freshers week entry..

Hey guys are there any good mnemonics for AR except NSPC? I have heard about CATSPENIS but don't really know what it stands for

And people who have already done the UKCAT, was the AR section of equivalent difficulty to the AR section in the 600 UKCAT book (old version). In the book it soooooo difficult and absolutely stupid. I posted this on the ukcat thread but no one replied over there -.-

It's going okay... I would have liked to have had a job by now and it is difficult now 90% of my friends are moving hundreds of miles away. But I've got hospital volunteering and a trip to Canada set up and I'm excited for the UCAS cycle to get into full swing so I can obsessively check my emails and track

Its tough seeing your friends move away (it was for me anyway) and start enjoying freshers. Just focus on your opportunity this year to work with a socialise with people who you wouldn't normally spend large amounts of time with (i.e. those who didn't get the chance to go to university, and people many years older than you).

Try not to get sucked in to the obsessive track/email checking, though that is obviously easier said than done. Now I'm just waiting to start I'm almost feeling a little nostalgic for all the UCAS craziness (there's clearly something wrong with me, I know :colondollar:)
I'm so sorry if this has been asked already :colondollar: but just wanted to know if anyone who used medify found its QR questions easier than/about the same as/more difficult than the actual exam?
I'm quite worried as I'm finding it quite difficult!

I would say its about the same or slightly more difficult.

However, I think I got slightly harder questions than most people so hopefully yours are easier. I've seen people say that their QR was easier than medify.

Hi, you're welcome. I'm a third year pharmacology student so I'm applying for postgraduate medicine for the first time. I have applied for undergraduate medicine in the past and failed to get an interview! I fainted today, which is weird because I've worked as a theatre HCA where I did not faint once, even during the bloodiest of procedures!

I'm definitely going to mention it because I learnt a lot during my Gap year; good luck with you're application

You fainted? Damn!

Good luck to you too!!!
