Geography and international development at UEA?

Hi, to anyone studying this course atm, do you enjoy it? When reading the modules online, they looked good, but the focus seems to be more on international development, and not geography, is this true? Because I want to focus on human geography as well as development? I've really enjoyed studying topics such as population, energy issues and cities at A level. Does this degree enable you to take modules on these topics as well as development? Thanks for you help

Different universities have different specialisms, so Geography courses might not necessarily cover all of your interests. UEA has a reputable International Development department, so understandably, a lot of the BA Geography modules are tailored around this, and population, energy and urbanisation are all key components of development so they'd definitely make an appearance or two at some point, you'd perhaps just be studying them in a different way to how you have at A Level.

Most degrees do offer some 'open modules' where you can pick up modules from other subjects too.

Thanks for your reply! So from what you're saying it does still feel like you're studying geography, as well as international development? Did the department seem friendly, etc? I've been ill for quite a long time so I couldn't attend the open days, which probably seems like an odd move but genuinely couldn't be avoided, but from what I've gathered, they've got a lot of connections with NGOs and they regularly host industry professionals to talk to students.

I've put Sheffield, studying BA Geography but within that you can choose 'themes', one of which is International Development.

That's sounds good! Sorry about your illness! Yes I was trying to find out more info about the Sheffield course, but there isn't much on their website, about what's in each module, etc. What do you mean about the themes, and how did you find the info?

If you type in the course you want to do on Google, the uni name and then 'module list' at the end, you should be able to find the full list of modules available at each university. I found that the ones I applied for didn't give much information on their websites so used this to make my final uni decisions.

Most of the info comes from post-offer open days, so if you can't get to prospective student open days, definitely go to one's held for people who have offers.

I don't know if they're actually referred to as 'themes', but there's a range of different pathways you can take in Year 2 and 3 and the fieldtrips are themed around it too.
