I totally and completely agree with you; all my family are Christians but I hate how commercialised and fake Christmas has become. The original meaning and spirit has been taken out of completely and replaced with this mindless greed and pressure on families to present to the outside world this 'impression' of all being well.

Your family sounds exactly like mine; splintered and dysfunctional and not really caring about one another. Add that to the fact that two years in a row now we have lost someone around this time and you have a truly miserable time.
Xmas is the only festival I love. <3 Everything shiny, aura of magic and Santa Claus.
YES! You sound exactly like me. It all seems so superfical and forced and it's so depressing
Many people have perfectly happy christmasses with their perfectly happy families, with presents being just a part of that.

I'm sorry your circumstances mean that you aren't ideally placed to enjoy it, but bitter talk about how the festival itself is flawed doesn't reflect well on you to be honest.
Twinkly christmas is amazing

Good for some; I suppose.

It isn't bitter; it's realistic. Who on earth in their right mind in this country would want to willingly get hundreds of pounds in debt buying presents for people, spend hours and loads of time slaving over unnessessary and elaborate dishes that aren't appreciated in the slightest and have to spend up to a week tolerating tedious distant relatives around the house? I know I wouldn't.
Well you need some relatives you more than tolerate and who appreciate your cooking, to be quite honest.

I enjoy giving and receiving presents because I actually like the people I have around me :dontknow:

edit: I don't want to come off as blaming you for not liking your family etc, I'd just like you to realise that just because that's the case for you doesn't mean it is so for everyone.

Christmas is perhaps one of the most depressing times of year. The pressure and expectation to be happy, jovial, and to buy into all the commercialisation just takes away any positivity I could feel. I am lucky in that it is a lovely time for my family, but I can't help but think about people who don't have the same and are coerced into spending what should be a happy time in a state of misery. Christmas is over hyped, idealised, and while it may be nice within family/ friendship groups, on the whole I hate it.

I like my relatives (well, some of them); it's just that on the whole, as a family, we don't really care about each other deeply. It's hard to pretend to be close to people who actually literally don't seem to care about you as a person.

Anyway, there is no further point in continuing this conversation; you clearly don't understand.
Is this you?
