New rules make it harder to challenge exam results

I'm very envious especially when people win the national lottery etc.

I'm also an idle lazy so and so as one my worst sins but that option wasn't on the polls lol.

"from this summer"
so
so does that mean exams taken summer 2016 get this treatment? you best be joking... you have got to be kidding me rn...
imma go stock up on some bleach brb
I think the fact that you can get your papers remarked shows that there is an obvious need for a remarking system. It can't just be my teachers who miss mark my work (in all subjects, from science to geography) when they are only marking 30 papers. Examiners mark around/at least 200 papers each!! if people can make mistakes with 30 papers they sure can with 200+ papers!
Good. Less whiny, entitled students going "WAAAH WAAAH, I deserve an A* even though I got half the questions wrong. I can't accept that I'm sh*t at *insert subject here* so I'm just going to appeal my result."

Horrible attitude and gives far too much extra work to the poor markers.

Presumably extra marks are only awarded when they can be justified...
We need to show our rage against the machine. It seems as if the government and examining boards want to screw us over because we're the last year of GCSEs. Give us a break. You've already change the system.

To be honest i don't know what all the fuss is about. At my university there is a strict rule, that a student is not allowed to, simply not allowed to, challenge the academic grade on a paper. Welcome to the real world!

Is that the case for all Universities? I don't think it is.If they do honestly do that then they are being idiotic, it is simply a matter of Statistics that there will be errors in some of the marking the probability of there not being errors on any papers is ridiculously small as people are not robots they make mistakes this is why I'm not harsh on examiners when they make mistakes because Statistics show the frequency of mistakes isn't really that bad considering that perfect marking is virtually impossible.

I don't see what anyone has got against remarks myself they are a very fair system for people to check whether they got the marks they deserved, the remarks are often done by senior examiners so its more likely that result will be the correct mark.If there is real concern over remarks this wouldn't make sense as those doing the remarks will also have been marking original papers probably so are those marks wrong?

I also don't quite get the problems with subjectivity in marking arts papers, examiners should be tested whether its a good argument not whether they agree with it you can usually tell whether an argument is well structured with evidence or whether its not(to some sense its more like mathematics than you'd think, does what they quote actually support their point). The problem with subjectivity of marking should really mean marks have to be standardised(multiple markers marking each paper) if we can't improve the issue

Do you want me to cite this?
As someone has already said, SQA did away with it when they brought in CfE. It sucks but it is what it is and that's what Prelims/Mocks are there for, to show you what will happen in the exam and how to answer. To be fair my teachers are really good in teaching us how to answer questions to gain full marks, i.e, if an Close Reading questions is worth two marks, put down four points, if you can get four Analysis plus marks in History, try and put six anayalis plus.

Really it puts you guys on par with us.
I'm so glad to leave these stupid exam boards behind when I go to uni.

Thank you. Took the words straight out my mouth. The concept of 'not challenging the grade on your paper' is complete BS.
There will be mistakes made and it is completely unavoidable.
My friend was graded a C in her RS GCSE - went for a remark and turned out the examiner missed out a whole question. If she never questioned the grade on her paper, she would be stuck with that C and not the A she deserved.

There should be no changes to the remarking system. There will be instances when an examiner will simply incorrectly mark something as wrong.

I found this out last year in my maths D2 exam. Attached is my answer, and the mark scheme. My answer is word-for-word as the mark scheme. I scored 1/3. Requested a remark, and my mark went up.

This is not to discredit the examiners, because they see hundreds of scripts per year. But from human error, things do go wrong.

For those who think that they need to challenge their result, the remark service should still be available.

I don't understand the "revise harder and you won't have to request a remark" attitude whatsoever. If your mark is lower than expected, then of course you're going to question whether or not it has been correctly marked. It has nothing to do with your performance/revision. My friend went from a C to an A after having a paper remarked. Mistakes do happen!!

If you have to pay 175+ euros for each subject's exam. Then why the **** are the papers not marked correctly.

Couldn't agree more!! Apparently (no idea whether this is true or not) examiners get paid around £2 per paper, so obviously want to make the most of that by spending as little time marking the paper as possible and therefore rush through it. If that's the case then something needs to change

Yeah. I heard this too..where is our money going? We deserve extremely efficient marking for each question we do. They should start hiring more examiners or start paying them more because this is actually a pretty serious problem.
Good. It is usually people who haven't done as well as they hoped or are close to a higher grade boundary and want to be bumped up a few marks to be in the higher grade bracket. It's not necessary.

More 'toughening up' of exams, it seems...

This is a much needed solution to the ongoing problem. Kids like myself are people who have benefited from this.

I was predicted 3 Ds and one E in Bio for my AS official results. I managed to get 4 A s in the official exams however. My Biology teacher first informed me that they have probably mistaken my papers with someone else's, however later informed that the grades are due to inflated marking and everyone received the same. Although I believed it, a lot of my friends were not able to get As and some even had to repeat the year because their grades were much lower than expected. She later asked me to request remark because she strongly thought that the grades were not achievable for someone like me & their had to be some errors. This actually brought my to tears inside but I tried to gain composure. I felt so helpless at that time, I knew I needed to drop out.....

The school was looking forward to hearing from me for A2 but I chose to drop out, unable to face my teachers anymore. Embarrassed and feeling guilty being in a prestigious school only to have other students be congratulated by the teachers, while there is suspicion and susceptibility on me.

The best way to avoid this is for markers to mark properly the first time round - that is, have several senior examiners or at least specialist teachers marking, without rushing and paying due attention to the work they are considering...I find it abhorrent that it costs so much to sit exam papers yet they are marked in such a rush

Absolutley! They wouldn't NEED to be remarked in the "first" place if they were done properly!
