Also given the murder rate by gun in the US, it's hard to argue that the availability of guns is making people safer due to the 'good guy with a gun makes us all safer and will save us all' myth.

The murder rate, along with nearly all other crime rates, has been decreasing significantly in the US:

Murder rate:
1980: 10.2 per 100,000
1990: 9.4
2000: 5.5
2010: 4.8

Violent crime rates:
1980: 597 per 100,000
1990: 730
2000: 506
2010: 403

In 1980, only 8 states had shall-issue CCW laws permitting citizens to carry guns on their person. In 2010, 41 states allow citizens to carry guns on their person.

So as more and more citizens have began carrying firearms, crime has plummeted. What now?

Yet murders by gunfire have stayed level.

To get to the UK's level of firearm murders per capita the number of such deaths would have to fall by an astonishing amount.

They have actually decreased significantly:
1981 Gun homicides: 15,089 (6.6 per 100,000)
1990 Gun homicides: 16,218 (6.5 per 100,000)
2000 Gun homicides: 10,801 (3.8 per 100,000)
2010 Gun homicides: 11,078 (3.6 per 100,000)

More importantly, this is an wildly irrelevant statistic. Overall, crime and homicide has plummeted, the method of murder has no significance. Personally, I'd rather be shot to death than stabbed to death.

Now let's look at the UK homicide rate immediately before and after the 1996 gun ban:

I'm sorry but the statistics couldn't be less in your favour here.
