When petrol is burned in the engine of a car, the combustion is not complete and some carbon monoxide, CO, is produced. Nitrogen monoxide. NO, is another exhaust gas. These gases can be removed by a catalytic converter in the exhaust system.

Lead poisons catalytic converters, it binds permanently preventing any substrate from reaching the active sites.
