Nucleophilic substitution reactions occur between compounds that have a single polar bond - that being one which the difference in electronegativity between two species is so great that the pair of electrons in the covalent bond (shared pair of electrons) move more toward one of the species, giving it a slightly negative charge (delta -) and the other a slightly + charge (delta +)
This makes the delta + species in the bond electrophilic - it wants to gain a pair of electrons. It does this via NUCLEOPHILIC SUBSTITUTION
This is where a Nucleophile (a donor of a pair of electrons (usually OH- or something)) donates 2 electrons to the electrophilic species and in one step the slightly -ve species is swapped for the nucleophile.
