Mature Students at Sussex

I'm currently 23, and in my second year studying Business and Management at Sussex. I'll be 24 this summer and will enter my final year of the degree this September. What have you applied to study?

I'm doing Law with American Studies. Do you find that there are many mature students at the Uni?

Hey! I'm not sure if I'm 100% going to Sussex yet but there's a reasonable chance that I might be as I have an unconditional offer for Psychology with Foundation. I'm going to be 23 when I start my course so I was thinking the same! If I do end up going there would be nice to know somebody a similar age. I'm currently researching different factors of the Uni to try and condense down my decisions!

What other Uni's are in the running? Maybe I can help, I've spent far too much time researching the University already and I've spent a lot of time in Brighton in the past. Is there anything in particular that's holding you back from choosing it?

If it helps sway your decisions, Sussex has a reputation for accepting mature students. Just out of personal intrigue, I have been trying to count how many over 21's are currently in the Business school in second year with me at the moment. There's roughly 300 total students across all the various business degrees and I know about 20 or so of that 250 are over 21 - but I'm sure they're more. Amongst them are a 27 year old single Mum and a 21 year old single Mum who are giving it their all to get their education.

Thank you - and you!! Other Uni option is Durham. Both courses seem equally perfect for me for many different reasons, so it's actually coming down to fine details that will help me make a decision. I'm loving the idea of doing a placement year though which Durham don't have... Im really not sure! What made you choose it out of interest? Have you applied for your accommodation yet?



Awesome, I didn't actually know it was known for mature students really! I was impressed that they had family accommodation though as lots of campus Uni's I've seen don't so it makes sense. That's impressive for Business alone, I wonder if Psychology is the same!

I've heard Durham is a beautiful campus, particularly if you prefer the quieter old fashioned feel!
That's similar to what swayed me towards Sussex, they offer a year abroad with my course which certainly was a plus point. I'm also a huge lover of Brighton! I love that on one side of the campus there's this wonderful city that's only 5 minutes away and on the other side it has the beautiful Downs!
I haven't but I'm pretty sure I'm going to try for Northfield or Brighthelm, as long as I'm in mature accommodation though and the rooms are decent, then I'll be happy. Have you looked at which one you prefer yet?

Hey I'm so sorry - I thought I'd posted days ago but it must have gone wrong somewhere!
But yes I totally agree, if I end up going to Sussex then I just love the idea of being surrounded by the Downs, being able to go for brief chill-out walks around the outskirts and then having Brighton right outside campus too!
Oh my gosh I'm exactly the same with that haha! I want to be with people my age too. I was looking at the same - Northfield or Brighthelm, but I just can't pick whether I'd prefer an en-suite, or a free washing machine & drier. Both have their benefits but not sure what to prioritise.

I completely get you, if they added a washing machine to Northfield it would be pretty perfect! I'm leaning towards Northfield I think, only because parts of Brighthelm are next to East Slope Bar which may get pretty noisy.

You have such a good point there! East Slope is supposed to be one of the nosiest too am I right...?! Hmm. I keep wondering whether to opt for the "quiet" accommodation or not!

Yup, that's what I've heard anyway!
I think I will, I only worry that being in "quit" accommodation will put me in a flat with people who don't like to socialise, I may not be a big party animal but I do like to be social!

Completely relate to you on this! Hopefully should be okay. It's a little relaxing to know I'm not the only one thinking it ha must admit Maybe if they're known for mature students then this arises quite often... Who knows?!

I'm sure it'll be fine, on the upside there's Brighton Uni as well across the road who have quite a few mature students there! I have a friend who's just finishing at Brighton and they have a self made mature student group called SAGA that has like 15 of them from their course and their year alone, so that gives me hope.

Further on from my last comment, I've now firmed Sussex so I'll be there in September!

I rang housing about accommodation too, it was evident that somebody was trying to give a bit more of a professional opinion than being brutally honest when it came to combining options for both Mature Students AND Quiet Area, so I've selected just Mature Students for my housing

Were they not very useful then? That what I've done as well, I don't want to risk being with people whose names I don't even know because they haven't left their room the whole time we live there. I'm all for socialising with my housemates so hopefully Mature accommodation will be good.
