Thank you very much for advice, will certainly be looking at competencies carefully this time around. 99% is indeed great, did you get accepted at the program?

Applications just closed yesterday but I’d hope i’ll get an interview out of it 😂

Will this be the week?

Yeah, I saw that too. I'd guess some time early next week as well.

I’m fairly sure they don’t give out HO roles any more to unsuccessful candidates, it’s just band O roles.

They told us that there were only O band roles for anyone unsuccessful. I made it to the assessment centre last year; it was a killer and I didn't get through, but I was eventually offered an O band in June.

What would you say was the most challenging part of the assessment centre?

Apologies for cutting in, but I'd say using their laptops. Seriously. The assessment themselves are pretty straight forward (looking back in hindsight).

The written assessments were made so much harder (I felt) because the laptops were awful for typing. You're trying to type quickly, while constantly assessing, and under pressure, using a machine you're not used to that isn't particularly user friendly (if you work in an office an have spare older laptops you may know what I mean). It sounds weird, but It just kind of compounds things.

Also, I was somewhat threw by the other applicants. Or, I should say I allowed myself to be thrown by my own anxiety of the situation on the percieved 'competition'. All the applicants I met were really nice people, but a lot of existing civil servants and a lot of people who looked like they had a few years experience did throw me. Maybe that won't be an issue for you, but it was a challenge to control, personally speaking.

I agree with JohnPOR about the laptops! The other candidates were all lovely; I felt like people were really supportive of each other. The worst for me was travelling for four and a half hours to get to the centre, arriving knackered and starving, and having to start immediately without even having any lunch. The tasks are demanding enough (imho) without starting off wrecked. I also don't sleep well in a strange bed - managed about two hours sleep in the hotel, before getting up to do the second day, even more knackered than the first! I think they should really consider having more assessment centres around the country. They use London and Newcastle for the Fast Stream, which is a bit more spread out for people.
Having said all that, I would still have been rubbish, even without the lack of sleep. I thought some of the tasks were very challenging.
to echo what the other two have said, the laptops are particularly challenging but as long as your prepared for it then it’s not an issue. generally speaking the 4 assessments are designed in such a way as to put you in a pressurised environment that you would feel uncomfortable in (1 of the 4 at least) to see how you perform and react
I must confess I didn't experience any issues with the laptops I worked on. The assessment centre was nerve wracking intially and I'm 44 and work for HMRC and neither of those things were a benefit to me on the day! I relaxed a lot after the first task but I found 1 task during the 2 days to be really challenging and it's where I failed and if successful again i will approach it in a different way as i believe each assessment centre is very similar each year. I would say it's a long way off to worry about AC with lots of hurdles before getting to that stage; I work with some clever people who failed miserably on certain stages of this process so take it each stage at a time as it's a long process
No. It's 2 half days. I thought that was a good idea. They provide accommodation, dinner and breakfast. A lot less exhausting than one full day I thought.

Apologies it's the way I worded it - it's across 2 days but you technically lose both days - the 1st morning with stress 🤪 - it starts at 1pm - 2nd afternoon lost with exhaustion 😴 it finishes around 12/12.30pm
Agree with it being better over 2 days it is too tiring to do in one day. I stayed in Warwick uni which was great - food was lovely and it felt like a hotel.

Standard response. I got the same thing when I asked.
I’ve signed up to an open uni online careers event and HMRC are listed to be there. It starts 5th November so I am hoping they’re going to be there to promote this scheme (which hopefully means they’re advertising soon).
message released internally to say applications open on 7th of November
