The Student Room Group

Can a lecturer make me do a group project on my own?

So, I missed my first lecture at uni and when I attended the second week groups were already formed. I told my lecturer and he just shrugged and said you'll have to do it on your own. I was just wondering is he allowed to do that? And won't that affect my grade?

Why did you miss the lecture?

Its their course, so I guess so.

I can say now a very high % of people would prefer to do their project alone.

Probably improve your grade and am sure the lecturer will notice you sis it on your own.

You could ask to join a group if its that important but I would do it on my own.
I wish I could do group projects on my own :frown:

Being able to do a project on your own is a blessing. If you're stuck, go to the office hours.
Seems fair, that's pretty much what happens if you're absent. If its a graded project then you can possibly ASK a group if you can join, but I doubt the lecturer can easily force you on a group when it's underway. As many said, being able to do it yourself could be seen as a blessing.

We had one last year for a graded field research project, missed the 1st session, then turned up to second, talked to his gf/played on phone/slept on desk before leaving at tea break....we went straight to the tutor and said we weren't taking him as we weren't putting up with it and that was that (in the end he got kicked off for turning up to the research trip in trainers...totally messing up his new team  )
actually that might be a good thing

uni group projects is like a WW2 simulator bro
Haha I ended up doing a group project on my own once and it was the best experience ever. Enjoy!

Welcome to life, where people do all sorts of things they may or may not be 'allowed' to do. If it really bothers you, check your couse handbook and speak to your class rep.

Or, as others have said, treat this as a good thing.

As for the second question - why do you think we might know the answer to that? You have access to all the information you need.

Good luck.

You really don’t want to be getting on the wrong side of your lecturer at this early stage, Most lectures don’t really care about doing what is allowed or not allowed. They are too busy dealing with 1st years. This isn’t school where you are spoon fed everything.
Just get stuck in to the work. Group work is hassle. Relationships get in the way. People are lazy and don’t pull their weight and still get the credit. Arrangements to collaborate fall apart.
Who needs that?

In ours we have to say which was our bit and read it in the presentation... So there is literally no way to leave the work on someone else unless they're that cheeky to ask someone to write their bit and just give them credit on the slide.
Mate this is a blessing in disguise. Group projects are about as bad as it gets.

Yes, and I gave it on my own in front of 200 people. This is weird, because I have horrible anxiety, but for some reason doing presentations doesn't bother me too much. It's so odd, because the tiniest things can set my panic off, but yet talking in front of people is fine.

Mann you have nerves of steel lol. I just don't like the questions part at the end, my brain cannot function under that pressure, even simply answering questions in class is impossible for me. Sigh. And my tutor puts so much emphasis on this sh*t. I can see why it helps, but for me it won't help (from experience). Not now anyway.

I don't though. I have a diagnosed anxiety disorder and have to attend counselling to deal with it. I can get stressed about cooking, working, driving, socialising, boiling an egg, keeping up to date with TV shows.. anything in the world. Yet, I can stand up and speak quite easily. The mind boggles.
I always found uni group projects were my own assignments but other people just added their name to it.
Yes.
He might be able to do that, but I don't see how that would work. Why not just add you to another group?

A lot of people seem to not like working in groups - it's an important skill to have so to be honest they should really embrace the challenges that come along with it.

On the other hand, if you are working on your own, and it's a small project, you should be okay. If it's not practical or reasonable for you to be on your own, then you should inform higher ups.

Oh I totally feel you there. My psychiatrist who was doing an assessment was pretty shocked when I said I had 0 anxiety moving from Manchester to London for Uni. I'm anxious about nothing but social encounters. The mind boggles indeed haha.
