I was a lot happier when I could get joy from video games :frown:

I don't really play them anymore and I am ****ing miserable.

If you feel miserable and are unsure as to why you should consult a professional for help/advice. Even if there are more obvious causes, such as an unfullfilling worklife, then they can still provide some support.

In the meantime if you feel like playing video games may help you then open up some old (or new) games and go through them! :P That's what I sometimes do when I'm feeling down. It helps take my mind off things and provides enjoyment in it's own right. Plus if you're able to play with friends that makes it all the more better.

So basically dont think about it, buy some video games to take your mind off it and get a prescription for Valium. Peak liberal advice

what you actually need to do is to stop doing what liberals tend to say is healthy and normal: quit watching porn, quit doing drugs and stop acting like a beta Male. Start working out and taking responsibility for your own life.

I’ve tried both and I know what’s helped me out and what’s not worked. Don’t believe me? Keep doing exactly what your doing 👍🏻

You’re miserable because you’re a nihilistic materialist with nothing to live for. You may think I’m a terrible person but I truly pity you and want to stop humanity from sharing your fate, which is the gradual disintegration of the geist
or spirit.
You still not tried shrooms yet?

alot of folk out there with the mh problems are better off cleaning up their lives than taking the harcore perscription drugs. no one is man enough to admit that the rise of mh is probably due to everyones daily cocktail of porn, netflix binging, social media, junk food, smartphone use, pointless internet browsing

Literally my first line was "consult a professional". Also God forbid someone seeks professional help for their problems and spends some of their free time trying to enjoy something recreational.

Your 'Start acting like a man!' approach to mental health may have worked for you but it doesn't work for everyone. I too had once gone through a very bad period of mental health myself despite getting plenty of physical exercise and "taking responsibility for [my] life". Professional psychological help, together with medication, is what eventually broke me out of this and I have been much healthier ever since.

You're in no position to tell others what will/will not work for them. This is the job of trained professionals who have far more experience with mental health than some arm chair psuedo psychologist like yourself. You can also go do one if you think that being told I was being a "beta male" would have helped me.

It’s dependent on what it is. If you have ‘depression’ and aren’t a complete moron, talking to a counsellor or GP is a waste of time. Sorry to break it to people but depression is a fact of life for most people you just have to get through it.

If you have mental health issues like PTSD or something then you should seek help from a professional , but we were talking about generic depression and not something liike that.

Incidentally I have almost ten years experience in the mental health sector...

Wow, I guess all the people with depression just have to "get through it", huh? Boy, I wish I knew that!

I had depression, which lasted for about 2-3 years and got progressively worse each year to the point of regularly self harming and wanting to commit suicide. I didn't "get through it" - I got help. My counsellor provided me with the tools I needed to deal with the emotional problems I was having and my GP provided me with the anti-depressants I needed to mend whatever bad chemical state my brain was in. If I did not get help there's a good chance I would not be here now.

Long story short, stop talking out of your ass.

Well I’d have to know your circumstances before making a diagnosis, esp the reasons for your self- harming. Which of course is up to you.

It is widely understood that anti depressants are over prescribed , and whilst certainly necessary in some cases come with consequences in which it would be better if no medication was given. It really should be a last resort.

Of course, the key to stopping depression is prevention: plenty of exercise, sleep, company and avoiding unhealthy habits are far better for you. Being upset such as when a friend dies is perfectly natural: you should be upset. It’s not healthy to take drugs to prevent emotions, unless you have an extreme impairment such as bipolar or something.

Just as with the history of the opioid epidemic, practitipners have become scared and pressured into over medicating patients, not to mention the role of big pharma. Look into the history of the opioid crisis and previous scandals.

As to whether you wouldn’t be here that’s unfalsifiable. You don’t know that.

Not only do I not need your diagnosis (I'm no longer depressed anyway) but you're in no position to give one.

If you seek advice from a counsellor or GP then they'll tell you that exercise, a good sleeping schedule, a good diet, etc, are all great ways that could tackle depression. So it's hardly a "waste of time" as you say it is, given that you think these things will help people anyway (which in many cases they do).

What they won't do (at least in my experience) is rush you into medication on the basis of something like 'I'm upset because my friend died'. It took me till the point of self harming before I was given anything other than beta blockers (which had been pretty useless for me). What they'll certainly not do is call you a moron, a "beta male" (how childish can you be?) or any of the other belittling things you seem to think about those with mental health problems.

SonI’m wrong for giving the same advice as the counsellor and GP would give anyway...Saving everyone time and possibly money

you are clearly getting very emotional and worked up, at no point did I say people with mental health conditions need to man up which is just just stupid. If you have something like PTSD,,Schizophrenia, Bipolar, etc (all of which I have extensive experience working with) then this is s lifelong medical condition which may certainly require the use of medication at some point just like say asthma sufferers.

The vast majority of depression sufferers however are more than capable of surviving without, just as you can survive a common cold/ head ache without paracetamol (although paracetamol has far less adverse side effects than most anti depressants in usage).

I am sorry that that you for whatever reason felt the need to self harm.,that’s something I also have extensive experience in eg working with people with a history of sexual abuse etc. And no I wouldn’t tell them to man up. But there is a world of difference between serious psychological trauma and just getting down every so often.

You literally said that people with mental health should "stop acting like a beta male". If that's not the same as telling people to 'man up' then it is no less abhorrent, stupid and offensive. You're right to say I've got very emotional over this because what you've said is horrendously rude, not to forget ignorant.

You've also said that it's a waste of time, bordering moronic, going to professionals about depression which is just as stupid (and also potentially very dangerous) given that a lot of people will need therapy and/or medication to help them. Even if you believe that a lot of people will just "get through" depression without it there are many people who won't, as was with my case.

I doubt you're actually qualified in the field of depression (or even PTSD, Schizophrenia, etc, although I have no experience with those myself) and even more so if you think it's just "getting down every so often".

Are you a woman? I’d always assumed you were a guy, so I didn’t factor that in.

In any case,

Yes I literally said that...as you’ve resorted to outright slander now I’m going to cease this conversation unless you apologise. At no point have I said the above. If you think mild depression is in the same category as PTSD or something you need your head examined.

I am a guy, yes.

You're free to end this conversation. You've been called out on your ******** and instead of just apologising for the rude things you've been saying you're now trying to act like you never said them. See posts #85, and later #89, if you wish to be reminded of the things you've said. If you're meant to be some ambassador of social conservatism then no wonder it's a dying philosophy.

Stop acting like a woman then

I said ‘rude things’ about mild depression not mental health sufferers where I specifically said that such people need expert advice and possibly medical intervention. Hopefully your deliberate conflation between mild depression and serious mental health problems will be picked up on by readers as well as your other dishonest debating tactics.

Social conservatism is growing world wide and shows no sign of abating. If you want to see a dying movement witness the fate of the centre left parties, particularly in Europe where people are waking up to the moral bankruptcy of liberalism

i pray you too find a path out of your nihilistic bubble.

You're backpeddling and trying to justify your awful opinions by saying 'I was only talking about mild depression!'. You weren't.

You said, and I quote again, "If you have ‘depression’ and aren’t a complete moron, talking to a counsellor or GP is a waste of time". See post #89. So no, you did not tell people with depression (of which you did not specify it being mild) to go seek expert advice; you did the opposite. You also scoffed my response to @ChaoticButterfly whereas I said they should seek professional support for their problems. See post #85. Before you say something like 'Chaotic has only mild depression': not only do you not know this but you don't even have sufficiently enough information to know it. You have absolutely no idea what else they might be experiencing, but do you know who would? A professional. Also, you can say you've worked extensively with people with PTSD, schizophrenia, etc, but unless you're qualified and trained in the subject of depression you have no right to diagnose others anyway.

Even if you were talking about mild depression only you're not suddenly excused for saying the incredibly rude things about it. A mild depression is still a legitimate mental health issue and can easily become more severe if gone unchecked (I can personally testify for this). If you're suffering from bad and prolonged mental health then you should seek the advice of a professional who isn't going to belittle your problems regardless of how severe (or lack thereof) they might be.

You can say I'm "acting like a woman" but I'm not acting like some edgy child who still uses the word "beta male". You say you've worked in the mental health sector for nearly 10 years which sounds like it should put you in your late 20's at the very youngest, likely early to mid 30's. Talk about man child!
