Trump To Declare Emergency Over Mexico Border Wall

President Trump wants to invoke rare emergency powers which will allow him to bypass Congress to build the wall. Congress has already refused to approve the money and if this goes ahead billions of dollars will be wasted on a useless wall. This is totally ridiculous and this abuse of power should not be allowed to happen.

it was a key election commitment. People complain that politicians lie to get into power but someone is doing something they promised to and youre still complaining.
Can't say I'm surprised, he's desperate to fulfil his promise of having peaches built.

Definitely an abuse of power and an absolute waste of money.

True but bypassing Congress like that is a total abuse of power, there are much more important things to put billions of dollars into rather than the wall. IMO the most important thing is American healthcare they should make it government funded like an NHS so you don't have to have any insurance or any bs like that whenever you need to go to hospital.
The wall very likely will work. You can tell this by the way Democrats are desperate to stop it being built.
If the thousands of illegal immigrants crossing the border were assumed to be very likely future republican voters (instead of Dems) Chucky and Nancy would be at the border building it Brick by Brick with their own bare hands.
I just hope he isn't around for another term to do anymore damage. He's a bloody child that takes to social media to whine when things don't go his way. Not professional.

What are you basing this on? There's no credible evidence that the border wall would be all that useful. It acts as a minor deterrent at best, which for the billions it would cost (assuming it ever gets finished, which is extremely doubtful) is clearly a waste of money. Border security officials have said many times that they'd rather the funds be spent on other systems. The wall is just a vanity project at this stage.

His key election commitment was that he would build a wall and Mexico will pay for it. So by forcing the hard working American tax payer to pay, he is violating his own promise. People are right to complain.

The real irony is that Hispanic Americans tend to lean toward social conservatism so they quite easily could become future Republican voters if the GOP stopped treating them like subhumans. Of course, this is unlikely since it's no secret that a major component of Republican strategy is to appeal to the racist vote.

Would rep.

Isn't it strange how the Dems are so resistant to voter ID laws and the idea of keeping out illegal immigrants.

Of course, "the wall won't work", which is why US border patrol keeps saying it's a good idea. Dooouyyy.

Trump could reverse global warming and people would find a way to paint him as the bad guy

He was elected because he’s not professional. People complain about the contrived and false nature of politicians and but then complain when the opposite comes along. Whether he serves another term is completely down to the democrats; if they put forward a super lefty who bangs on about social justice and supports 40 week abortions they’ll lose again

It is weird how border security, i.e. controlling the borders not merely to stem immigration but to try to limit violence and drugs and human trafficking, is seen as "racist". Now it has that tag, the lefties can no longer have a rational conversation. It is similar to the "socialism" tag; once the project is thusly named, it has lost popular support even if its specific framework is acceptable.

It is the art of shutting down discussion with one word.

Well how about we wait until he reverses global warming first... Then I'll praise him no end. But instead he's removing environmental regulations and making it easier for big companies to pollute.

Though I'd say the inverse is correct. Trump could quite literally shoot an innocent bystander and plenty of people would still defend him. He even said so himself.

He is false though. He said Mexico would pay for the wall. He lied and now he's asking the taxpayers to fund it.

I also find it quite telling that supposedly liberteains, anti Big government individuals on the right such as yourself seem perfectly happy with the President declaring a National emergency to give himself increased power.

this highlights a fundamental problem with American politics: too much power is given to presidents! How could they have a constitution that allows a so called democratically elected president to bypass the country's congress?

Specifically which environmental regulations has Trump personally removed?

The inverse is also certainly correct and those people are moronic and laughably partisan as the people who condemn everything Trump does (AOC's refusal to applaud Trump talking about locking up sex traffickers being a prime example).

That's true, he did say that and it does to some extent invalidate the mandate to build the wall. However it also seems to me that anyone who really voted on the basis that Mexico would pay for the wall is as ignorant and unintelligent as the people who voted leave because Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson promised to put £350m a week into the NHS.

When have I said that I'm happy with what Trump's doing? Across all of the political comments I've made on here my position has always been consistent; I'm favour of a small state and individual freedoms. In my ideal world anyone would go and live anywhere they like so long as private land holders didn't prevent them but in the real world there are economic incentives that people take advantage of and because of that immigration needs to be regulated. The wall may have no effect but if I were American and it was my problem I would be in favour of either measures to curb illegal immigration or finding ways to prevent illegal immigrants from damaging local economies and using taxpayer funded services.

1. America isn't a democracy
2. Presidents don't actually have that much power

And an election commitment of the new Democratic House majority was that they would prevent Trump from getting the wall.

The US in this crisis precisely because Trump hasn't delivered his election promise, as a result of his own incompetence. He had two years with his own party in complete control of Congress to pass legislation for the wall, and he went nowhere. Then he only started actively demanding it after losing control of the House (as the result of an election where he'd made immigration and the wall the central issue, and taken a thumping as a result), and proceeded to get into a standoff where he really had no significant leverage, and made his position worse. He made no effort to offer the Democrats something they actually really wanted in exchange for the wall. For all his claims of being a great "dealmaker", Trump has shown himself to be a comically bad negotiator.

No other president has felt that their inability to deliver on a campaign promise constitutes a "national emergency". Precisely because, pretty much by definition, it's not. Trump even admitted it with his astoundingly stupid "I didn't have to do this" remark that will likely get torn apart in the courts.

Do you think this will go the courts? I've been hearing that rather than take this to the courts, the Democrats might might instead want to instead do their own "national emergency" to get one of their policies through.
