Should I get tutors for national 5?

I just wanna ask is it worth getting 2 tutors every week for National five Maths and English? I just thought that it is National five and I would be paying at least £40 every week in total (added both tutors together) for 1 Nat five Maths tutor and 1 Nat five English tutor. So is it really worth getting tutors for any Nat five subjects? I am thinking about getting them at the end of September but have no experience with any tutors so I have no idea how to approach them I.e how to talk to them or welcome them in my house. Any suggestions will help! Also I don’t want online tutors as I would rather learn person to person.

I got a tutor for maths, but that was only because I was in danger of not passing, though you should probably talk to your parents about it if the tutor would be coming to the house

They already know. The main concern is I’m not in danger of failing Maths, I’m just scared like other people about it cause I really was told that I’m good at Maths but that kind of adds pressure for me since everyone expects me to get an A (including my last year and this year teachers) which I’m worried if I come out with a B. There are a few things which I would want to be taught over again by another person possibly a tutor (Changing the subject of the formula etc...) as said before and for English I am in danger of failing it so that’s the main reason why I picked to get a tutor for it. I would like to ask how do I approach a tutor in my house and is it reasonable to get tutors for the Nat five’s?

Maybe you could wait until after your prelim for maths and if you don’t do well get one then? And just be normal about them, offer a cup of tea and just be ready to work. Most of my friends had tutors for at least 1 subject and if it helps you get the best grades idk why not to get them for Nat5, though it can get expensive

Hope you don't mind, I've just moved this to its own thread :smile:

If you are struggling with maths and English and can afford it, then it's up to you- it's unlikely to do any harm. Tutors are by no means a necessity to get top grades though (at any level of exam).

In my opinion, you should get a tutor in emergency situations for example: teacher doesn’t teach and you are near your exams; when your prelim went badly and you need extra support; or you want the tutor to teach you, etc.

I had a tutor for maths n5 last year as I wasn’t convinced about the teaching at my school. IMO if you’re going to get a tutor you need to get one ASAP as spaces will fill fast, especially after prelims.

I didn’t have an English tutor and got an A - I used websites such as Bitesize and Scholar and frequently took notes.

I’m sitting N5 maths for the first time this year and my teacher advises us that there is no need for tutoring - websites such as maths180.com and national5maths.co.uk are very useful for revision.

To be honest I’m only finding bitesize helpful for poetry only. I’m still not good at RUAE. I used bitesize to study for my RUAE paper and techniques for my third year exam and came out with a no award. As of for maths, thanks for the useful websites! (But there’s still not any angles section I can find on the maths 180 website).

Tutors are expensive and usually in high demand. I’d only really recommend getting a tutor if you really feel you need one because you are struggling consistently and your teacher isn’t providing adequate support. If you’ve been getting high marks in both of the subjects, I probably wouldn’t bother, especially if you feel you could easily go to your teachers if you needed a little extra help.

Tutors are definitely not essential to getting As. I got an A in English and maths despite not having one. In maths I actually went from a D in my prelim to an A, just because I really put the work in and practiced lots.

Should I get tutors for national 5?
