A levels for a law degree

Hi everyone,
I’m having to choose my a levels and I think I have decided on:
A level History
A level Geography
A level politics
I’m worried that politics is considered a ‘soft’ subject and if I want to apply for law at say oxbridge then I will be at a disadvantage.
What are your thoughts?

Yes I have. I enjoy it and I am not that bad at it but I know it is a big jump up to a level and I’m just not sure I’d get a good enough grade.

Yeah, its better to do something you think you would get a better grade in.

I can't comment on Oxbridge, but Law at most other Unis does not require any specific subjects.

Many people find an essay-based subject useful background, and elements of History and Politics may give you some useful prior knowledge, but none of this is essential. People with three science A levels manage just as well.

Politics is not seen as a soft subject. It is up there with History, English, Sociology etc.
Check for Oxbridge, but for all other Unis that combo of subjects is fine.

If you look at the entry requirements online you will see what each Uni wants - there are no secrets, if they want or prefer particular subjects, they'll tell you.

Your subjects look fantastic and apt for Oxbridge. Please don't listen to misinformed people who might say that Politics is 'soft' or not facilitating enough. It's perfectly fine, especially combined with your other subjects.

I'd actually highly recommend RS because of how easy it is to do well in. It really is an easy grade all the while being extremely interesting. A lot of it is common sense. It's a very respectable subject as well, so it would do no harm for you to study it.

In any case, a combination of 3 from the following 4 would be perfect: History, Geog, RS and Politics. If I were you, I'd take the subjects that you enjoy the most and think you'll do the best in. At the end of the day, you want easy marks to get into your favourite uni.

Thank you so so much, I really appreciate the reply! I will definitely look into RS as I know the department for it at my school is really good. I have also been thinking of doing an EPQ, what are your thoughts on that? If I were to do: History, Geography, and Politics or RS and then an EPQ do you think that would be a good combination? Sorry to ask so many questions!

I enjoy politics, but law may look for “facilitating subjects”. If you enjoy politics stick with it, but as the user says above, English Literature you might find to be better.

There's no evidence that politics isn't looked as favourably as literature, and if there is, that is sad, and I say that as a literature student!
