I don't need to work for monetary reasons, but I do need one to put on my CV

I'm luckier than most students, because all my expenses are being paid for, but it came at the price of losing my beloved grandad :frown:
i read in a magazine that 1 student worked as a security guard on night shifts for 8hours a day and 4 days a week, he said he took his laptop to work to do some uni-work, and only missed a few hours of lectures in the morning
i am sure this guy made enough money to pay back his student loan plus a whole bundle of extra cash in 1 year, but i am also sure that this guy missed a whole bunndle of good social events, if you are an insominiac then this might be a good idea for you

I reckon the most sensible thing is just to get a job whilst you're on holiday. Balancing a job and studies and a social life sounds far to risky and could ultimately comprimise your overall degree, so I think the best thing to do is to just work full time during the holidays and study at university when you're meant to. University is meant to be a full time job after all...

I wish I had the luxury of just working in the holidays.

I'm planning on working about 16 hours a week normally, then full time in the holidays. Can't manage it any other way.
Am hoping to only work 9-5 though (weekends) when it's not the holidays, so I should be free to socialise every evening.

i won't be able to manage if i don't get a job. i will run out of money after the first week!
This is very interesting. Most American students work while at university, and even during high school. It seems like in the UK it's very unusual or even frowned upon unless you have serious financial need. I work on-campus because extra money is always good! And the hours are pretty flexible, they try to accommodate our study schedules.

Your NUS should lobby for more on-campus jobs and flexible work hours for students...it seems so unfair that rich people can enjoy while less-affluent students have to make a choice between having a social life or not due to money.
