O2's reception's quite reasonable. Never had it drop signal on me in the York area.

I've just swapped to Three- quite desperately hoping they're the same.

You are right! :O

Well... accommodation-wise, I am pretty much torn between James College (specifically Block L - nothing material behind that choice, just like the letter 'L'!) or the new Vanbrugh College accommodation. Basically en-suite, band three or four, fairly local to the English department...

BUT, I want to know which college has the better atmosphere, is more sociable, has the greater 'college spirit' et cetera. I have gathered from speaking to several York students that if you choose any band three or above en-suite accommodation, you are basically entering into 'rah'-ville. I'm being conflicted now because I don't really want to live in 'rah-ville', but nor do I really want a 'cell block C' experience.

Which to pick?!

Which accommodation are you leaning towards? :erm:

That's just like me! New Vanbrugh also appeals to me, but I know it has the reputation as a musical college so I'm not sure it would really suit me... Surely if there are 400+ students in James college, not alllllll are going to be 'rahs'?! What are you going to be studying by the way?

Sorry for interrupting!

Orange was fine on campus for me
Was previously on Orange. Had no problems.

T-Mobile's mostly fine, although on the rare occasion I lost signal. They've struck a deal with Orange, which seems to have fixed things.

Yeah, SURELY out of all those James students there must be a massive number of non-rahs. There are many of us on TSR saying we want to go to James but are concerned about the rahs... I say let's go to James and help change that tradition! When I visited York in February, I hardly saw any (of what I consider to be) 'rahs' - where do they all hang out, I wonder - the York Jack Wills store?

I'm going to be studying English and Related Literature. I note from a little bit of post-stalking that you will be studying Sociology?

I'm still torn between new Vanbrugh and James, despite my rally-against-rahs polemic haha. I think I need to create a pros and cons list and let them battle it out on a page. Let me know which you pick! X

It was the cheapest I could find for July... but if we went in June they are like £100 cheaper, but then I would have no money for when im there as i still need to earn it! Yeah, well i have 8 weeks, so the 24h recovery will be fine!
A friend of mine here shares a room, she said they don't really get a choice if they share or not, but Im not sure. Anyway, her room is amazing. It is massive, and overlooks the beach. And her roomie is never there as she has a boyfriend, but then id probs find that a bit lonely in such a big room.
Hmmm, your making me reconsider alcuin. Maybe i will eventually get round to researching again and then make my mind up. I will be travelling on August 1st though, so either I will need to decide before i leave and get my mum to do it, or try and find an internet cafe to do it myself! Im literally counting down the days now. But its like 3 months, which seems an eternity, but im sure it will go by quickly!

yeah so true, if you make another grand in that time then it's better cos you've got like 900 quid more or something!! so jealous!
ah but a roomate with a boyfriend could be ok, like never there, or like ALWAYS there and maybe with no shame...
time is WEIRD, i've been working for a whole month now! can't believe it. was SO busy all day at work today and still finished all my tasks 30 mins before i could go home, just can't win!

i really don't think that york is a very RAH university, on any of my visits i didn't see a single gilet or strange side parting or pink and blue stripes! i just don't think it attracts rahs, not that i know what atttracts rahs to universities, probs a jack wills in the city!

Yeah, well exactly! Yeah, well thats what i was thinking, if i ever bring a girl back, or if my roomate does, would be just super awkward, so id rather have a room to myself!
Ive been working for agesssss. Socialising is eating away at my money though, need to make sure i save enough :s . Im the same, i finish before i need to, but i need to actually do my 40 hours to make sure i dont owe the company money. its soo frustrating, its supposed to be a salary, but its like a combination of salary and hourly pay!

Also, whats this obsession with rahs, people are who they are, its just as snobby to disregard a 'rah' as it is to disregard a 'chav' so just accept peeps for the way they are. but i do agree that york isnt full of rahs, because the actual rahs got into oxbridge, durham, st andrews etc. i think york is kind of where the rejects go (please dont hate that fact, its still really good!)

There is a really big boys boarding school in York, I forget what its called but i met someone at work who went there. and yeah, they will need their jack wills fix of course!
Okay, I'm just going to butt in and ask...
How does everyone decide on their accommodation, I know we get to choose, but they're so different! :s-smilie:

Have you seen the videos?
I guess the only way is to go there and find out what they're like, I'm fairly confused about it too (I like Goodricke best but it hardly seem practical)

i completely forgot i might end up playing 1000 quids worth of olympics tickets if i get them all at the maximum price!! so best allow for that, only 12 days left to apply i think
well today i did get to leave 90 mins early, but i had to run errands on the way home so it was only an hour, but still nice! i spent like 30 quid on food and travel last week, so annoying! i don't even remember eating anything that nice!

i think it's cos "rahs" are newer than chavs, chavs have been noticable since we were like 10 at the latest? i think most people just don't like anyone who perceives themselves to be better than anyone else. cos everybody's equal. love and peace and rainbows and yada yada yadaaa
and everywhere is full of oxbridge, like probs only like 30% of york and most universities (bar like oxbridge obvs) will have applied with it as their first choice. cos they may not have got an offer from their first choice, or maybe they got an offer but missed the grades so had to go to their insurance or through clearing. so many factors! but yeah my bro goes durham and he says SO many oxbridge rejects
Hiya everyone,

In response to your query!! I had these EXACT same worries before I chose James College. I was worried about there being rahs and this sense of college spirit...

In my opinion, I believe that James College is one of the best colleges on campus. During my freshers week you have a real sense of college spirit because unlike the rest of the other colleges who have STYC's (Second and Third Year Contact) that help freshers during the first week find their feet and take them out partying.... James college have a parent system.....whether you are in a block or a flat... you have a Flat Mum and Dad who are the same as STYCs that added to the sense of community. You will also have Grandparents who are the members on the JCRC of the college. For example, I will be a grandparent next year seen as I'm on the committee as an 'Ents rep' with my team who organised events and the entertainment for the college we'll also be co-organising Fresher's week for you guys...as well as other members on the JCRC like the Vice Chair Services person and Annual Events Co-ordinator.

It is easy to get involved with the JCRC whether or not you want to be on the committee there are email addresses and notice boards so you know who is on the committee if you have any requests or need any help at all. For example, there is a welfare team, LGBT team. If you want to get on the committee at the end of your first term there will be a chance to nominate yourself for particular positions on the committee, for example, Ents reps, Sports reps, Bar reps the list goes on and on so you can feel like you have every opportunity to get involved with your college. This not only happens with James College but all other colleges.

James College has such a mixture of people but so does every other college, I'm not going to lie and say there are no 'Rahs' because everywhere you go there will always be someone around who has such characteristics. Though being here which I was really surprised about during freshers week and even up to now (about to begin my third term of first year) that everyone is so lovely wherever you, I found this really surprising that I got on well with everyone I spoke to in the freshers week!

This was another thing I was worried about York was the nightlife, I had heard all kinds of rumours that the nightlife was rubbish or not very good at all. I think this all depends is what you are used to at home, if you live in London you'll think WOW cheap alcohol, if you live in Leeds or Manchester or Liverpool you'll think York is much quieter and doesn't have as many clubs etc. Though in my opinion, I absolutely love the nightlife! For the past two terms I went out at least 4 times a week! Events on campus need improving, there seems to be a belief held that they're not going to be very good when they haven't even been to any on campus? Which I think is silly. The on-campus events I have been to I've had so much fun! The last one I went to was a Vanbrugh College 'When I grow up' they had a bouncy castle (+ alcohol), cheesy pop music very very fun! There are also YUSU events (separate to College on-campus events) such as Viking raid which is a bar crawl for over 1500 students that are ran termly. Hmm there are always events on or in the means of being organised!

There are so many societies it's unbelievable! In your first week, you'll have a freshers fair where you'll have the opportunity to go round all the societies and sports clubs and see which you are interested in....you also have a re-freshers fair in the second term so if you haven't been to a society/sports club you like the look of you get another opportunity to join up. What the great thing is about these fairs is you get LOADS of freebies to.. we always have a dominoes pizza stall where you go up for free pizza... If you want to know what societies/sports clubs are at York Uni.. go on the www.yusu.org.uk which lists them all as well as email addresses if you want to get in contact with them.

If you have any other questions, please ask.

Also, if you do not feel that James College is for you then don't worry, the other colleges are also really good. Derwent is known for being the party party party college, but it's also known for its not very nice accommodation. Goodricke is a beautiful college, all new and knowing the events team there they are really good too though really far away from campus. Halifax is also a college that is off-campus, but it's not too far away at all, about 5 minutes away there events team have been really really good this year, last term they had did 'Take Me Out' and had an after-party at Vodka Revolution which was hilarious.

Sorry for the essay guys,

Laura

Hi! I'm completely undecided about accommodation at present, except that I'd like en-suite and central location (as about everybody on here also seems to!). Are there any colleges to avoid? I hear bad things about langwith (socially) even if it is where my department is based, Also what was freshers like for you? I know theres a rush of going out and meeting people but is there anything in particular you'd suggest? Thanks if you can answer

Hello!!

I have written an essay already which should answer everyone else's questions too. That is exactly what I wanted en-suite and central location - James College was very much that for me. The college which are exactly central is Vanbrugh, then Langwith.

It all depends on your personal preferences, like I personally wouldn't choose Langwith or Derwent they just didn't appeal to me at all. They didn't have en-suite despite having the party party atmosphere particularly in Derwent. Langwith is the smallest college and if you chose that college you would know everyone in your college - this to some adds to their college spirit?

My freshers week was fantastic! I loved every minute of it. We were the only college that had events on every night, providing alternatives both drinkers and non-drinkers...me being me went out every night but it all depends what you want! I will be helping organize James college's for you guys to make it even better than my freshers week.

Before I came to York last October, I spoke to as many people possible probably around 80 people. Yes I know alot....I had a very very lonely boring Summer before coming to York. I have made many life long friends doing this, some I talk to all the time and others I don't... I'd say I talk to the majority of them. I tended to search for people on facebook after joining York University 2010/11 freshers groups and getting to know people that way. Some people find this a really scary task, I had my doubts about doing this...like, what if they don't like me in real person? What if they are different in real life?....Shall I just wait til I get there? I personally do not regret one minute of getting to know these people before I came there. But I am not going to lie, I was so nervous and scared before I arrived about meeting these people having those worries I mentioned earlier...after meeting them now, I do not know what I was even worried about - you just have to trust people.

I hope this has helped and if you have any other questions do not hesitate to ask.

Laura

Yeah we should just go for James! Ooh very nice, what's the 'related literature' bit? And yes I'm hoping to study Sociology  I think it shall be good old James for me! Let me know what you go for  You reckon you'll be getting involved in any of the societies then?

The 'related literature' part is for foreign literature! Should be good and challenging...! Ooo, I definitely want to get involved in some societies - thinking of joining a philosophy one at least. How about you? I really cannot wait to start now... I wish I could go to sleep tonight and wake up in October. I'm going to think about the James vs Vanbrugh topic a little longer... but chances are, it'll be James all the way! :cookie:
