can you pass one module if you get 40% in both of the assesments (worth 50% of the overall mark for that module each)? and how would this effect you passing 1st year?
Yes you can, and it would just mean you get 40% in one module.
What I would say is that everything you learn in your first year is the foundation for the rest of your degree. Don't aim to just pass; actually try and get decent marks as it'll pay off in your 2nd and 3rd years, if you get that far.

As long as you get 40% you have passed the first year. But don't create bad, lazy habits for the years that count.
