Yeah I was quite disappointed as well! I have no idea whether I'm in mixed or single sex, I asked for mixed but god knows! I'm in flat C2! I read that the ranmoor accommodation is only 2-3 mins away from Endcliffe but it was still a bit annoying! What are you studying?

Yeah apparently there was more girls who applied than boys this year so they've has to put girls who asked for mixed in single sex! Annoyed though they've been really rude on the phone as well so much for best student union in the uk... I'm doing geography  you?

Really that's not very good. I'm going to ring on Monday and find out whether I'm in mixed or single, probably single knowing my luck! Do you know how many people you're going to be sharing with? I'm doing law with criminology!

Yeah I know! I've put in a request to transfer but they said there's about a 2% chance of getting anything, great! Haha. If you ring accommodation services they'll tell you whether or not it's single or mixed  Pretty **** how they don't tell you which one it is on the contract as well! Oh cool do you know what day you're going on?

I'm in B5 in Ramshaw and asked for Endcliffe mixed sex :/ although I suppose it was a long shot getting into Endcliffe because it is so over subscribed :')

Me too! I applied for Endcliffe also and was pretty disappointed, so I rang accommodation services and they said there's nothing they can do, and I'm also in a single sex flat which I didn't ask for :frown: So gutted. I don't understand what their criteria are for accommodation allocation ... I put my preferences as mixed and Endcliffe and I've been given single sex Ranmoor... Fair enough the location probably doesn't make that much difference to your uni experience but there's no way they can even suggest that being in a single sex flat offers the same student experience as a mixed flat.

Hi Elena,

I was in a single sex flat when I was uni (same situation as you, applied for mixed and didn't get it) and I have to say, it didn't affect my uni experience at all. I got on really well with the other girls in my flat (we're all still really close and it's been six years!) and I met loads of other people through getting involved in student societies and socialising with the other flats in my block and my coursemates. I had a really mixed friendship group all the way through uni - even though I might have immediately lived with all girls, I still hung out with plenty of guys, and I'm still really good friends with most of them (I even live with a couple of them now).

So, as I say, don't worry too much - I know it's a disappointment to begin with (I was pretty disappointed too, from what I remember), but I totally forgot about it once I'd arrived and started throwing myself into stuff. The University experience goes so far beyond where you're living, so I am sure you will still have an incredible time, even though you didn't get you first choice of where to stay.

Any questions about life at Sheffield, just let me know - I was a student here for five years as an undergrad and postgrad, so I know a fair bit about the place!

Best wishes,

Georgie, Student Communications Team at the University of Sheffield

P.S. Sorry you didn't have a great experience when you phoned up - that's not cool. The Accommodation Team are rushed off their feet at the moment so I am sure whoever you spoke to didn't mean to come across so brash. Just wanted to let you know, too, that accommodation isn't handled by the Students' Union, except in cases of support (difficult landlords, and the like) so if you have any further questions, let me know and I'll see what I can do to help. The Students' Union don't have a hand in the university accommodation processes (they're actually a totally separate team of people) so they're not the right people to contact with accommodation related enquiries at this point.
