Affect or effect?

Going through my personal statement right now...
I have realised that i've always put affect with an A not an e
For example "the way english affects me"
How do i know if i am using the right version?

Affect is the verb, effect is the noun.
In that example you have used the correct version, English DOES something to you (it affects you) so it is a DOING word - a verb. If you were going to say 'the effect English has on me' you are saying 'the effect' so it is a THING - a noun.

(A general rule is that if you have to say 'the' before it, it is usually effect)
Thanks everyone!

Effect can also be a verb.

Effect can also be a verb.

I'm quite hurt that you think I might not know that, but I figured we shouldn't muddy the waters for someone having difficulty sorting out the primary uses of the words.

Oh I know you know(!!), but I quoted you to make clear which post I was adding to. You're right though (various "spell check" programs refuse to acknowledge the possibility anyway :colonhash:).

Sorry to keep asking. One of my teachers says in this instance "....a novel that has a significant affect upon a person..."

It is AFFECT
whereas my other english teacher says EFFECT

This has already been answered in this thread, and fortunately by more reliable sources than some of your teachers.
