A computer to start data science course

I'm about to begin my BSc data science course this October and so I'm wondering if i need a more powerful computer than the 2012 non-retina 13" Macbook pro I'm using. Previously I've run Xcode and FreeMat (open source version of MatLab) with occasional errors. I presume that I will need to handle quite a bit of large datasets and run some stats tools that may demand even more resource than the previous tools. First am I correct to assume this? Second should I get a higher specs laptop (probably windows) or should I expect that my university will provide me with the necessary resources (e.g. a lab)? Appreciate all.
I doubt it. 90% of any degree is writing essays and researching the net. No idea what IDE you will be using though so it might be worth inquiring as to whether a PC might be more useful. All my dev work at uni (15 years ago) was on UNIX!

Good luck!
