At least we brought them a modicum of civilisation. If they had been colonised for as long as, say, Africa, perhaps it would have done them a world of good. It doesn't help that they abide by a savage and militant religion that encourages fierce resistance to anyone that brings enlightenment and human progress.

Yeah. They didn't even know they had oil until the west told them. They didn't know how to extract it until the west showed them. They were incapable of refining it until the west did it for them.
Without the west, their economies would still be based on selling spices and racing prize-winning camels.
