You do realise only 8 unis in the UK offer veterinary medicine?

It nevertheless helps the profile of a university.

I find it hard to believe this.

That is a fact.

You do realise Aston has a medical school right?

Doesn't matter what the degree is, Notts > Aston.

My boyfriend is doing CompSci at UoN and it is VERY good quality teaching. He has few courseworks due in every week (no jokes, at least 2 per week) and lots of lectures and labs. He generally enjoys his degree and the computer science department is not accessible to non-CompSci students as well as located on smaller campus out of 2 (if you were worried about socialising with large group of people). If you live on campus, you will be able to see the department from your window so it's quite close too.
Furthermore, social life is great in Nottingham

EDIT: ok, it will have one. Sorry, wasnt aware of that! Though Keele has medical school as well and, from what I heard (EU student) it isn't really a great uni

They will start offering the MBChB in 2018. Like the UK needs ANOTHER medical school. Crazy.

I don't think many TSR students realise how nice the main campus (and indeed also the Jubilee campus) at Nottingham is. Other than the likes of Bristol, Edinburgh and possibly Durham, you would find it hard to find a more beauiftul university outside of Oxbridge than Nottingham.

its mainly for international students though. So can't be really considered a UK medical school if hardly any British students can get in. Nevertheless, it says on their website it is GMC recognised and so has to offer adequate education

Not much between Keele and Aston really, they are both in the same league tbh.

Medicine is a competitve degree and UK seems to lack doctors (especially GPs) so it seems logical to create another medical school. Especially if students attending it will have to pay for it themselves (so it doesn't pose extra burden on student finance)

Maybe there is a shortage of GPs, but I have not heard that the UK is short of hospital doctors. Not but 5-7 years ago there were too many doctors being trained.

there is shortage of certain hospital doctors (eg. A&E). NHS hires a lot of international doctors, because there isnt enough UK graduates.

Do you have proof of this, or is this hearsay? Getting off topic.

Why this need to bash Aston? It was created a university at the same time as places like York and Warwick, and you're not bashing them. It has all ensuite accommodation, so has already made that lauded investment that Nottingham is supposedly making. It is a world leader in the professions and business and one of the most competitive universities around for business after London. It has an international reputation and their industrial placements have a long and distinguished history and an established reputation, which attracts prestige. It's also ranked 2nd in the UK for teaching while we're talking it up. It also has that medical school that supposedly boosts its prestige.

Do people actually feel threatened by a university climbing the ranks, claiming prestige and investing in its students just because they went to a Russell Group and Aston isn't in it? That the prestige they thought they'd claimed by attending it doesn't actually count for as much as they thought it did? Don't get me wrong, I've attended three RG universities and 4 world class universities in my time so I appreciate the prestige as much as anyone. But it doesn't stop me appreciating the merits of universities outside of that class and supporting people in their decisions to attend. Lancaster is now better than the university I first attended. Do I care? Not a jot. Doesn't devalue my degree and I've encouraged many people to go there. I've encouraged people to go to Northumbria for the specific opportunities it offers in computing, game programming and psychology. You can look beyond the name and focus on strengths.

OP, it sounds like you've got an excellent set of offers in hand. I suggest you take the one that's right for you and if saving money and an industrial placement are right for you which it sounds like they are then firm Aston and enjoy it. It sounds like you'll do well there.

Aston was actually one of my choices (UCL, KCL, Nottingham, Birmingham, Aston), and easily the weakest of the ones I applied to a few years back. UK rankings don't measure prestige well (even a leading professor of Mathematics at Durham said that their methodology was flaky). The World rankings are better for this, but they must not be looked at in isolation, as they too offer differing measures. REF is quite a good measure.
I'd go with Aston
Sad to see that you've had some crappy replies here… but honestly if you remember one thing you get told here, I'd have it be this: go with what YOU want because in the long run that's also the place you'll do better at. You say you think you'd be happier at Aston. What if you go to Nottingham and don't like it there, become depressed and let that affect your studies? No, seriously, if you're happy somewhere, you can have a better chance of doing well, as long as the teaching etc is good, which Aston is.
In terms of it being a small uni, you're bound to make friends. Unis are still way bigger than schools and we all made friends at school, right?
Don't let reputation pull you into something you don't want. I can tell from your language that you love Aston, and it is really good for your course, so you've got nothing to lose, really.
