Big Four graduate schemes and exemptions?

I'm considering applying for an accounting degree - I've decided to follow this route rather than an apprenticeship because I really want to go to university and I don't think I currently have the confidence etc to go straight into work, and it will give me other options too.
I just wondered how useful exemptions are? I saw on tsr some saying that Big Four companies don't let you use exemptions, is this true?
Do other firms let you use them?
Liverpool University's Accounting and Finance degree can result in 12 exemptions, so that'd mean only 3 exams + work experience, if exemptions were allowed.
Hi,

No idea where this myth of Big 4 not allowing you to use exemptions comes from- they love exemptions!
The less time you have to be at college and the less they have to pay for your tuition the better for them. You get an easier ride out of it so it's win-win for everyone.
The only time I've seen where you can't use an exemption is with at least 2 of the Big 4 who ask that all of their graduates sit the very basic certificate level Accounting and Assurance exams regardless of whether you're exempt or not.
They exemptions you'll get will all depend on what modules you choose, how rigorous they are and the firm you choose.

Is this for ACCA? I've never heard of any degree giving that many exemptions apart from PwC's high flyer degree programme.

I think so, I can't remember where else I read it but it's on the ICEAW's careers site under the ACA-accredited degrees. I know most degrees cover 7 or 8 modules, so it did surprise me.

Okay, thank you! That's really helpful to know

I mean, ICAEW will only let you have up to 8 exemptions though exemptions are possible for 12 papers, a few firms don't allow exemptions in accounting, assurance, financial accounting and reporting or audit and assurance (varies by service line) so having extra ones could be useful.

Oh, so you aren't exempt from 12 of the 15 if you do the degree with Liverpool?? I did think it was surprising that all the other degrees gave you 8 or less exemptions.
On the ICAEW website it says, when describing the Liverpool BA Accounting and Finance programme, 'This degree offers accreditation for all 12 ACA modules at the certificate and professional levels' - this makes it really confusing because, to me, that does make it sound like you are exempt from 12?

Basically just means you'd be able to pick which 8 you are exempted from, tbh the downside of exemptions is that you have to work while everyone else is having a cushy time in college. To be honest if you have to pick an exemption I'd go with all the tax units and the business planning (I'm a banking auditor, tax is so not my thing). The other thing that's a pain about the ACA is that the certificate and professional level exams are largely aimed at manufacturing/more general businesses that either make/buy and sell things so if you are a financial services specialist you'll be really glad to have the exemptions!

Ignore what I said above. You're right! You do get 12. This is a relatively new development from icaew as previously you would not have been allowed so many.

It's a wonderful degree to go for in that case!

Ah that's great! Thanks! It's confusing and more-difficult-than-it-should-be to find out! I wish on Liverpool's website they made it clear - couldn't they just say 'this degree leads to X number of exemptions' rather than just saying it is accredited!!
Although, natninja (above) has said you actually only get eight...so I'm still not definite. Might email Liverpool or ICEAW to find out for sure!

I mean it must be very new because at the moment they only allow 8 and they haven't updated us on it and they send updates on the most minor changes... usually when there are more than 8 available it just means you get a choice over which 8 you get CPL for.

Okay - I have emailed and will post on this thread when I get a reply. I hope one gets all 12 but it does sound like you just choose 8, as you say.

I finally got a reply and just to confirm things once again, you do get exemptions from all 12, providing you pass the modules.
