university or apprenticeship for high achieving students

Basically, in my (Scottish) exams I achieved 7 National 5 A's, 5 Higher A's and am predicted 4 A's for advanced higher. As a straight A student I haven't really considered anything other than university (I'm applying to do engineering at various universities including Cambridge).

My question is, for a good long term career, is it worth applying for some apprenticeship schemes at big engineering companies like Rolls Royce, Red Bull F1 etc.?
Apprenticeships like that are amazing but a degree is usually required for jobs like engineering. Getting into Cambridge is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity but many apprenticeships are available for a while. You could always do an apprenticeship after your undergrad degree or apply for deferred entry and do a year long apprenticeship during your gap year. Good luck
