The phrase ‘Throw Caution to the Wind’

Where is the meaning of the saying derived?

I find it counter intuitive as I would think an individual who throws caution to the wind, would be the one who treads carefully and yet it’s actually the other way round. The one who throws caution to the wind is the one who acts wrecklessly.

Is anyone able to shed light on this saying?

Google will tell you the derivation in a few seconds. But if you have some caution, and you throw it into the wind so it blows away, you are reckless!
