Thought I’d post something on here since I had no idea what to expect beforehand so if anyone has theirs coming up hopefully this might help a bit. As people have said they review your portfolio beforehand for about 10 minutes before inviting you in. When I walked in everyone (the 2 lecturers and a student) was standing up and all my work was laid out. I think I presumed the stuff on top was the things they were interested in but actually when they asked for me to talk about one of my pieces I think they meant anything to be honest, so I never got to explain some of the stuff below the stuff on top, which was a shame since I think some of those ideas were important to the collection as a whole. Definitely have some things to say about a few specific pieces. Likewise, have some questions about why Newcastle specifically and what artists inspire you and any recent exhibitions you have seen. Think it might be interviews at all universities but I felt quite uncomfortable and there were a few awkward pauses where I ran out of things to discuss. I think maybe the set up made me nervous so I ended up talking very quickly - be prepared for something you’re not expecting and try and stay calm (might just have been me since this was my first!). Don’t be afraid to take charge of the interview and direct it where you want. Decide beforehand what you want them to know (about your work, the future and history of, and about yourself as an artist) and what is important to you. Where you think an art degree will take you and why you think you should be studying it (and especially there). Hopefully this helps!
