I mean how fair is it to spend more on luxuries for yourself than on basics for your kids.

That's true. My parents - and most others - would go hungry to give their kids food, clothes and such.
They annoy me so much. My mum works in a school and one of the parents is on benefits when she is not entitled to them. She has two children who my mum works with and she says they have ADHD but they do not at all! And whats worse, guess how much money she gets per year? She gets £18,000 for each child, so a total of £36,000 for basically lying through her teeth!!

That is the most annoying thing about it all. I will go without, my kids regularly have more food on their plates and I'll go hungry just so I know they are not.
I need to go back to work so I will work I night shift in a factory and then work towards my degree in the day as well as look after my kids, god knows when I will sleep. I know the easy option is waiting for me if I want it, if I am a single parent I can go on income support, get quite a lot of money and still study for my degree but I would prefer to live with my boyfriend and let my kids have their dad.
Has anyone started bleating the 'C' word yet?

This is exactly what my parents did. My dad worked 60 hour weeks and my mum worked 3 nights a week on top of doing her degree. The idea that people are some how benefiting their childrens up bringing by staying at home is a pretty stupid one because i've turned out better than 99% of people who choose benefits over hard work, as will your children. The thing that makes me loath to stop benefits is that there are good honest people like you in the world who it helps get out of tricky situations.

If we couldn't have gone on benefits then I think that the kids would have gone into care. I know it sounds terrible but we had no money or notice when my boyfriend was made redundant. Benefits need to be seen a temporary solution, I have never considered not going back to work.
I knew of one women who's only child was nearing 16, she has never worked and instead of losing all benefits went out and got herself pregnant. I don't even think she knows the dads name.

Exactly, it's done its job perfectly with you and stopped society losing some very valuable members indeed. I wish there was a way to stop human greed manipulating it, perhaps there should be a time limit for how long you're on it and the money gets gradually reduced, along with the mother/father not being allowed any luxuries at all. i.e. people follow them like in the program and make sure they aren't smoking/drinking. Go to their house make sure the money is being spent on toys, clothes and books and not tvs+playstations. Make sure the childrens diets are good by checking the fridge.

In America I believe there is a time limit and then they stop your money, it must be from the time you have your first as otherwise there would be plenty of families with like 12 kids lol. They do give out milk tokens that have now changed so you can spend them on fruit and veg as well. It could be that some shops operate like that on shameless and swap the tokens for fags and cider anyway?

Perhaps but I think that's why there should be inspections. I hated that Michael Moore film where he said it was disgraceful mothers had to get a bus for an hour to work to feed their children because the government had stopped their welfare lol.
It made me laugh the other day when it showed some incapacity benefit fraudsters on the news, like one guy who was filmed playing golf  when he's unfit to work. Hmm.

i imagine there are a lot of people on benefits who are seeking employment but are having a hard time too... I mean i'm very well educated compared to most people but struggling to find work after coming out of further education. Just because one woman makes it into the news doesn't mean that you should stereotype every single person who receives benefits as a money grabbing leech.

The fact that said woman has been forced to pay back some of it illustrates the fact that the government is trying to make benefits avaliable to legitimate people who genuinely need the money.

Ignore that post. The person is talking nonsense!

For the record: the maximum amount of Mobility Allowance is £46.75
and DLA for care is £67, a total of £113.75 per child per week. That is a total of around £5,000 per year. Note that these are maximum amounts.

The mother would also be entitled to premiums on things such as council tax and rent but that's all. Any other benefit that she gets would be child benefit as does every other parent and any income support. She probably has a maximum income of £18,000 per year inclusive of all her benefits, not per child.

Two things
- Would that be 18k income non-taxed? ie a 25k income for an employed person?

- Why should she get 18k when the dustman get 14k (taxed)?

why should the dustman pay for her to get a larger income than her?
any reasons?

I'm not talking nonsense! I couln't believe it either, it may be a total of all other benefits, but she definately is receiving £36,000 a year for the 2 kids with suppossed 'ADHD'. Because it is so rediculous my mum along with senior management at the school has reported her for benefit fraud and it is currently proceeding through the courts and if she looses the case she is likely to have to pay it back or risks being imprisoned.

I don't believe that benefits should be something for nothing except for people with diasbilities which prevent them from working. Ok give them the benefit but surely in return the taxpayer should recieve something?
