Hi, I'm adamant on going to UoB for medicine. I've just attended a Medic Mentor conference and they've heavily expressed doing lots of extracurricular activities such as research and publications but it seems it to mainly support those who want to go to very prestigious unis.

For extracurricular activities and work experience, I am a leader to a student-led medsoc, I have a single day of work experience shadowing a consultant and have reflected a lot from it and I also have a part-time job working in a corner shop where we communicate with the general public very heavily. I am still looking for volunteering at different hospitals but COVID has hindered my progress significantly, including cancelling a 2 week programme.

For those who have been accepted in UoB medicine, what extracurricular activities did you pursue and what was a make or break? I would seriously, serioussllly, appreciate any help.

Thanks so much.

Don’t overthink extracurriculars. Birmingham need good GCSE’s and UCAT scores for shortlisting for interview. At interview you may have the opportunity to mention your extracurriculars and WE if it’s relevant to the question. Obviously these should be in your PS, but Birmingham only cast their eye over this before making offers to look for red flags.

I am a local sixth former from birmingham. My head of sixth form said this year they do not care about practical work experience or volunteering will be required as part of your application.
Hi, After reading the new scoring with Birmingham. I am bit confused in that sense that my school is on the list of contextual criteria but the post code come under quintile 4, as for the contextual score should I get 2.5 as the school is in the list or 1.5 as the post code is in quintile 4.

Attending a school on the list gets you points, the amount is determined by your postcode, so you would get 1.5

Apparently it is one of the best hospitals in the world.

I bet the staff are under a lot of stress, so I wonder:

Do the med students get to do their placements at the QE ?

Yes, a lot of them will do. Perhaps you can research into the specialties they do and talk about it at interviews (if you get one?).

For example, the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is also in Birmingham - if you mention this at the interviews then they'd know you have researched. Another example would be with Glenfield Hospital in Leicester specialising in cardiology / cardiothoracics.

Hi! I applied and went for interviews last year and got accepted for 2021 entry (i applied for a gap year).
I was wondering if there's anyone else with an offer for 2021 already?
What is a competitive ucat score for UOB ?

UCAT only counts for 30% of your score, with GCSE's 45% and contextual 25%
Hi,

I am hoping to apply to Birmingham for A100 2021 entry, my stats:

GCSE : 998888776 and A*in further maths
maths and bio: 9 and 9
English Lang and Lit: 8 and 8
chem and physics: 8 and 8

UCAT 3010 Band 2

Do you think I would stand a good chance of being selected for interview ?

Thank you in advance

Is this a serious question? Of course 🤣
Find this so confusing, so with full
GCSE points non contextual, what you you have to get in UCAT to be safe?
