How does the MPhil in 3rd year of med school work?

Very, very random question and possibly a very silly question too. I know some medical students take a year out of 3rd year to do a masters which is about 6 months long (correct me if im wrong lol). Doesnt that mean they miss about 6 months of content from the year 3 course as not all the students choose to do a masters (if that makes sense). What would the students who don't choose to do a master do? just carry on attending normal lectures etc?Honestly, im not even in med school yet but im just curious and slightly confused, ty! x

oh ok, I was thinking it was just like the intercalated. So what happens to students who dont want to do a masters, do they just carry on the course?
