A-Level English Lit/Lang Critical Reception Help?

I find context pretty easy enough to understand and apply to my essays, but I can't understand how to apply critical reception? How does the reception of the text have any meaning to it whatsoever?
The time it was written in I can understand because it influences the author themselves, but the reception?

If anyone understands or can explain to me how to properly use reception as a contextual point I would really appreciate it! Maybe my understanding of the whole concept is wrong hahah
