Need help on maths foundation question Gcse

Question:

At the end of the day, a driver works out the mean distance they have driven so far thar week.

At the end of 5 days, the mean distance they have driven is 185.5 miles per day.
At the end of 6 days, the mean distance they have driven is 190 miles per day.

Work out how many miles the driver drove on the sixth day of the week.

Could someone please explain the process as well.

How many miles did they drive in total over the 5 days? If you're not sure, think about how mean is calculated and then do the reverse.

Then do the same thing for the 6 day period.

If you get stuck, please post all your thoughts and working.

Here's the process:
x/5 = 185.5 then make x the subject by multiplying each side by 5 so x = 927.5 miles (in total on the 5th day)
now repeat the process but for the 6th day
x/6 = 190 then make x the subject by multiplying each side by 6 so x = 1140 miles (in total on the 6th day)
now that you know how many miles were driven in total on the 5th & 6th day you want to subtract the number of miles on the 5th day from the 6th day to work out how many miles were only driven on the 6th day
so you do 1140 - 927.5 = 212.5 miles on 6th days
-so in nutshell you basically reverse the process of mean calculation on each day then work with these numbers. To find a mean you need to divide the total amount of miles by the number of days, in this question we don't have the total no. of miles but we do have the mean & days, so we work backwards by multiplying the mean by 5 or 6 rather than dividing it.

Here's the process:

EDIT - it's breaking forum rules to give a solution ....

My working out is:

190x6=1140
185.5x5=975.5.
I dont know what to do after this.
Regarding the answer to the question, could you please exam why you subtracted towards the end?

Regarding why you subtract, we are assuming that on the first five days 185.5 miles was driven per day.
We also know that after 6 days 1140 miles was driven in total, correct?
And if 185.5 miles has been driven per day for the first five days, that gives us 975.5 miles driven for the first five days.
And if 1140 miles were driven across 6 days and 975.5 miles were driven across the first five, the difference is going to be the sixth day. :smile:
