French resources

Hello everyone!
What books would you recommend for learning french at GCSE and A Level, and are there any that encompass both?

As a transition between GCSE and A level, I would recommend these :

The Tintin books by Hergé. There is a wide range in the collection. These are cartoon stories, but they are well written and the pictures help you understand.

Mon oncle by Jean-Claude Carrière. This was the first novel I read in French many years ago, as a fifteen-year-old. One of the rare novels that started off as a film, and not the other way around. Farcically funny and really not difficult at all.

Novels by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, particularly Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran and Oscar et la Dame Rose. These are well-written shortish novels about serious themes (the first about friendship and religion; the second about terminal illness) but they are easy to understand. Monsieur Ibraham crops up sometimes in A level syllabuses.

Un Sac de Billes by Joseph Joffo. A semi-autographical account of Jewish boys in France in the Second World War. Again, well written and easy to understand. Another one that comes up in A level syllabuses.

Any of the Maigret novels by Georges Simenon - there are 75 of them! These are detective stories; easy to follow and a joy to read.

If you want to read something a bit more classic, you could try some of the stories in Lettres de mon moulin by Alphonse Daudet. These are a bit harder than the above but each story is very short.
