first impressions don't always show the truth of a person

i learned that people can smile, be friendly, make a good impression, and have a sense of humour, yet still not be your friend

I don't understand. Are you asking if everyone that has good manners or are polite, is your friend? The answer is clearly 'no'.

To consider someone a friend, we need a mutual connection, our personal constitutions or values need to align and furthermore we both would choose to spend time together repeatedly.

If someone smiles at me, I smile back - We are still strangers,
If someone holds the door, I'll say thank you. - We are still strangers.
If someone makes small talk, I'll have a chat - we are still strangers.
If someone tells a funny joke, I have the same humour and laugh - Thanks, but we are still strangers.
If someone buys me a coffee when we are in the cafeteria together, very nice of them, - we are probably still strangers, maybe acquaintances, but not friends.
Gifts, small talk, being polite does not acquit friendship.

Friends repeatedly choose each other.

It is just 'common courtesy' but it's better than people being grumpy
