how important are mentions of non academic activities on the ps? how many lines should be dedicated to it? applying to physics at oxford btw, but would like to get an idea generally

Non academic and unrelated? Not important at all. You can completely ignore them in an academic PS with no issues.

Non academic but related to physics (podcasts, documentaries, recreational visits to museums or observatories etc) are useful to include alongside other more academic super curricular activities like reading and study beyond your curriculum

As said above, related extracurricular activities can be a great way to demonstrate interest and passion for what drives you to apply for the course and demonstrate direction for where you think it will send you. It's definitely worth mentioning these things as examples!
