A-Level options and future careers?

Hi,

I’m currently in Year 11 and interested in taking Philosophy, English Literature, and Art as my options next year.
I think this is a fairly sensible move for me as I am incredibly passionate about all three subjects (and predicted 9s in their rough GCSE equivalents), although I am unsure of the practical applications of each when thinking about my future Uni degree and eventual career. I have (unfortunately) endured many careers talks but I’m still completely undecided about what I’m going to do with my life - aside from the fact that it will probably be related to art or writing.

I would love to hear from anyone who is currently taking these subjects about what they are planning to do in the future as well as anyone who has completed each course so that I can get a better insight into what I could do post A-Levels.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @vivadixie,

I haven't completed or taken these subjects, but hopefully I can provide some reassurance!

It certainly sounds like you've thought a lot about this, and it's great that you're looking into where they can take you. It's also important to remember that many people are undecided about what they'd like to do - many students change their degree focus and the average person switches careers 3-7 times!

However, there are loads of websites that you can use to explore your options:
- This can give you an idea of where your A-Level subjects can take you: https://www.theuniguide.co.uk/a-level-explorer.
- I find the Prospects website to be really helpful. They give you an idea of job options for your subject area, relevant work experience opportunities, relevant skills that would help you, and more: https://www.prospects.ac.uk/careers-advice/what-can-i-do-with-my-degree / https://www.prospects.ac.uk/.
- The UCAS website is also extremely useful: https://www.ucas.com/undergraduate.

Best of luck, and I hope this helps a little!

Humanities graduates are employed for their 'higher thinking skills' - not for their subject knowledge.

Don't worry about 'career' at this stage, just go for the subject(s) you will enjoy studying - that's the whole point of degree level study.
