really stuck on uni essay

"What is a membrane potential and how is it maintained in the cell?"

- what should i include in it? right now i just have a lot of description but i don't know what im supposed to argue about? like what can i analyse because this title is just mainly based on definitions and facts and im supposed to write 3 pages

also never heard of a membrane potential in my life so i have to do all my research from scratch, please tell me what to include (key points etc)

thanks! relieved to know ive covered most of these points except the role of hydrogen and external stimuli, could you pls lmk what you mean by external stimuli? is it just what causes action potentials
