In the past 7 years History at Newcastle has been lucky enough to expand as a Unit, taking in more students to our programmes and also inviting students to take our options from other Units. This did impact on class sizes and has led to some delays in feedback and marking, and a sense of a learning community.
However, we have been turning this around in recent cycles and our latest National Student Survey (NSS) results demonstrate this. The other reason we have not returned to our previously high satisfaction rate of a few years ago are broader structural issues of Covid disruptions and industrial action. These have unfortunately impacted on student experiences, although we have worked hard to mitigate them. Despite a tough few years we remain a very popular choice for students and the students who engage the most in terms of attendance, meeting with seminar leaders, going to skills sessions, and good routines, report the highest satisfaction.
