NZ job prospects

I know this is a long shot as there won’t be many in this site who are well versed in the New Zealand job market, but I am seriously considering working there after I graduate, so if anyone knows a relative or friend who moved there, or just knows a bit about the strength of some relevant industries or sectors there I would be grateful for advice.

I am currently studying a BSc in Politics and Economics at the LSE, so I would naturally be looking at the financial and services sector. A well paying job would be nice but primarily I’m looking for areas that are in demand (for the visa of course).
Would I be able to get into some roles with just my ug degree? Or would it be wise to specialise with an MSc in an area like Econ, Data Science or Actuarial Science?

Google is your friend. Half the world wants to work in NZ so the requirements are very clear and all laid out on their immigration website. You need to have either one of thier high need professional skills or a very large amount of money to invest (or marry a NZ resident etc). As a recent graduate, I don't think you've got much chance, but as a 30 year old with financial sector experience, maybe?

(I'm a former NZ migrant but now returned to UK.)

It's a while since we navigated the NZ visa system and there have been lots of changes, but I think your best approach is to see if you would be eligible for any roles on the green list to then apply for a work to residence, straight to residence or skilled migrant visa. TBH there doesn't seem to be many roles listed under business professionals in your preferred field (healthcare, construction and farming roles dominate the list). The financial jobs market in NZ is much smaller than London, but NZ is a small country. I also think you might struggle being a new graduate with no work experience. A better route than an MSc would be getting a job in the UK and then applying to NZ jobs with experience. Perhaps even applying to companies in the UK that have a NZ presence such as Citigroup. The following link might help you identify suitable companies:

Thanks for your advice. Yeah I've looked at that dreaded job shortage list before, and indeed there's practically nothing in the financial sector. Real shame as our equivalent list in the UK includes economists and actuaries, meaning I would be sorted if it was the other way around :/

But yeah looks like my best bet is working in the UK in a related sector for 5-10 years first and then trying my luck, just a shame it doesn't really fit with my wider career plan.
